The earlier humiliation at the reunion and army training foreshadows his desperate need to reclaim something, anything, that belongs to him.

Chul-gon had helped the senator get into political office, but the senator subsequently refused to return the favor or acknowledge their past relationship. When the senator won't cooperate, Chul-gon uses the train hijacking as leverage to force the political concessions he believes he deserves. It's a revenge plot disguised as a hostage situation.

Chul-gon's criminal nature is established early when he steals the lighter without hesitation and orders his men to beat Bong-gu.

Bong-gu's confrontation with Chul-gon at the train station escalates when he refuses to back down. Bong-gu then pursues Chul-gon onto the train, intending only to reclaim his lighter. However, Chul-gon already has larger plans involving the senator. When the senator refuses to comply with Chul-gon's demands during the journey, Chul-gon seizes control of the entire train, transforming a personal conflict into a dangerous hostage crisis.

The shift from a personal dispute to a larger criminal operation happens when Chul-gon's true agenda is revealed on the train.

By the time the train is hijacked, Bong-gu's pursuit has become about much more than a cheap lighter. His determination has evolved into a refusal to be humiliated again. Giving up would mean accepting that he is powerless and worthless, exactly how he's felt throughout the film. The lighter has become his symbol of resistance against a life that keeps pushing him down.

Chul-gon helped the senator rise to political power, likely through illegal or unethical means. Once in office, the senator refused to return the favor or acknowledge Chul-gon's contribution, essentially cutting ties with his criminal past. Chul-gon's willingness to use violence and coercion is established from his first appearance.

Bong-gu has nothing left to lose. He's been humiliated at every turn, has almost no money, and lacks any real power or connections. His reckless confrontation isn't bravery in the traditional sense but rather a desperate act born from total frustration. He simply cannot tolerate one more humiliation, even if acting on that feeling puts him in grave danger.

His pathetic status throughout the early film makes this sudden boldness both surprising and somewhat inevitable.

The taxi ride establishes the chain of events that leads to the lighter being lost. Bum-soo is simply a fellow reservist who happens to be traveling the same route, and his presence provides Bong-gu with a way to reach the Seoul train station. Without this coincidence, Bong-gu wouldn't have been at the station at the exact moment Chul-gon arrives.

The uneventful taxi ride contrasts sharply with the chaos that follows.

The lighter symbolizes Bong-gu's remaining dignity and sense of self-worth. After a lifetime of failures and a single day of compounded humiliations, the lighter represents the last thing he can call his own. Its small monetary value is irrelevant, what matters is that it's his, and losing it without a fight would prove that he's truly as insignificant as everyone has always told him.

The lighter's purchase is deliberately described as his last few won, emphasizing its importance relative to his poverty.

Chul-gon is established as a volatile, opportunistic criminal who takes what he wants without regard for others. The lighter has no real value to him, but he takes it simply because he can. His character is defined by power and domination, stealing from someone weaker than him is second nature. His casual theft sets the entire conflict in motion.

His violent reaction when Bong-gu confronts him reveals his ruthless nature.

The reserve training sequence serves two purposes: it establishes Bong-gu's ongoing pattern of humiliation and sets up the circumstances that lead him to buy the lighter. The harsh, degrading experience reinforces his sense of failure and his desperate state of mind before he even loses the lighter to Chul-gon.
