Decades after the childhood events, the adult Sasha listens to recordings of her mother and interviews social workers about Jeremy’s case. In the final sequence, memory, projection, and wish fulfillment merge as Sasha reenters the past. She imagines herself both as a possible rescuer and as the social worker whose intervention persuades her parents to send Jeremy into foster care.
