In the oppressive heat of summer 1981, Gisigu embarks on his daily fishing routine on the Red Crow Indian Reservation. He stumbles upon a disturbing sight: the gutted salmon refuse to stop twitching, signaling something amiss in the environment.

Sheriff Traylor is called to address the troubling situation of a dying dog owned by his estranged wife, Nurse Joss. With a heavy heart, he must administer a mercy shot, showcasing the emotional weight of his estranged family dynamics.

During his visit to Joss, Traylor learns that their son, Joseph, has been arrested for vandalism in Hollarbaster. This revelation deepens the tension in Traylor's family as he grapples with the implications of Joseph's actions.

Upon returning home, Traylor is confronted with the surreal sight of the still-twitching fish. As he processes this bizarre occurrence, he is unprepared for the haunting events that will follow, including the unsettling reanimation of the deceased dog.

After witnessing the dog reanimate in his police cruiser, Traylor and Gisigu are pushed to take drastic action. They choose to consign both the tortured dog and the fish to flames in a symbolic act of mercy and desperation.

As night falls, Traylor and Joss embark on a daring mission to rescue Joseph from jail, joined by Joseph's half-brother Lysol and Officer Shamu. Their united front soon faces chaos as they encounter a rabid attacker who viciously bites Joseph.

Joseph is rushed to the hospital where he is met with the anxious gaze of his expectant white girlfriend, Charlie. The pressures of these relationships become heightened amidst the urgent struggle for survival.

Following a call from local resident Shooker, Traylor finds himself ambushed by Shooker's white companion. He manages to eliminate the threat, showcasing the dangers present in their chaotic environment.

Six months later, the region is ravaged by the ominous 'zed' plague that forces the indigenous community into a fortified compound. The adaptation of the Red Crow people begins as they discover an unusual immunity to the disease, contrasting the fate of the white population.

As tensions rise within the compound, Lysol becomes increasingly frustrated with Joseph's actions. His decision to bring outsiders into their sanctuary leads to heated exchanges and growing animosity among the survivors.

During a terrifying moment, Joseph discovers Lilith, a former community member, has turned into a savage zombie. The urgency to contain her escalates as they flee back to the safety of the compound, highlighting the constant danger they face.

Frustrated and in pain, Lysol confronts Joseph over the influence of white survivors, leading to a climactic explosion of emotions. In a tumultuous moment, he unleashes Lilith within the compound, throwing their once-safe haven into chaos.

As the duo returns from a mission, Traylor and Gisigu find their home overrun by zombies. In a heroic act, Traylor sacrifices himself to the horde, buying precious time for his family to escape the clutches of doom.

With tragedy weighing heavily on their hearts, Joss, Joseph, and Charlie manage to escape alongside Gisigu and Bumper. They navigate their perilous surroundings, leading to a confrontation with Lysol's associates.

As Charlie goes into labor, Joseph is faced with yet another heartbreaking decision. Overwhelmed by grief, he ends her suffering, finding himself lost at sea with Joss and their uncertain futures as the world crumbles around them.
