The Last Survivors

Ten years into the drought, Kendal dedicates herself to caring for Dean, a fellow orphan who is dying from kidney failure. She refuses Gabriel's offer to leave and join a nearby farm, choosing to stay and watch over Dean's last days.

Kendal answers a plea for help on the two-way radio and sets out to help, only to discover it is a trap set by marauders. She hides as marauders kill the family, failing to save them, then returns home in darkness.

With wells drying up, Dean theorizes that the warlord Carson has drilled into the aquifer and is siphoning away water. Carson runs a small, tempting safe haven, promising relief for those who join him. Kendal remains skeptical of the offer and watches warily as Carson's influence grows.

Grace tells Kendal that she has accepted Carson's offer and plans to move with him, urging Kendal to come along with Gabriel. Kendal remains skeptical and hides when Carson arrives, wary of what the so-called safe haven really means.

Carson rapidly executes Gabriel's entire family, justifying that only Gabriel is salvageable. Gabriel reluctantly betrays someone by turning in a relative, and Kendal escapes by dodging a sentry. This brutal strike underscores Carson's ruthless control over water and people.

Kendal visits Alby to share Dean's plan to escape in a Cessna, hoping he will join them. Alby insists he can survive alone and asks her not to visit too often, as it would attract Carson's attention.

After scouting Carson's compound, Kendal retrieves the distributor cap needed to fix the Cessna, a crucial step to their escape. She returns home, continuing to play the wary guardian in a hostile landscape.

Three survivors appear, seemingly in need of water, but reveal themselves as threats. Dean, barely able to walk, shoots them to protect Kendal, and the attackers are killed. This intensifies Kendal's distrust of outsiders and pushes her to be more independent.

Hearing gunfire draws Carson's men to the farm, and Kendal escapes the pursuit. She returns to Grace's farm and retrieves a katana from one of the graves, arming herself for the coming confrontations. This weapon becomes central to her fight for survival.

Kendal goes to the house to drive out intruders and kills the men left behind to search it, including a masked priest and Gabriel. The brutal clearing demonstrates her increasing resolve and readiness to defend Dean and Alby.

Kendal returns to check on Alby only to find that Carson has abducted him. She storms Carson's compound and kills all the henchmen guarding it, determined to rescue the boy and end Carson's control.

In a brutal showdown, Kendal fights Carson and kills him with the katana. Brooke nearly overpowers Kendal with a choke, but Kendal breaks free and stabs Brooke. With Carson dead, Kendal and Alby prepare to leave.

Kendal and Alby reach the repaired Cessna and start it up while piloting away from the compound. When asked about Dean, Kendal tells Alby that he is staying behind to endure the drought and perhaps await a future rescue. They take off into the harsh sky, leaving the fate of their friends uncertain.
