Rich heads out on the lake to count lampreys but is killed by the creatures. His body is found and taken to the morgue, where lampreys burst from the corpse and attack the coroner, underscoring how quickly the situation escalates. The outbreak proves to be more dangerous than anyone anticipated.

Despite the fatalities, Mayor Bruce Akerman refuses to shut down the lake, prioritizing tourism revenue over safety. Michael goes to the press to warn residents about the danger. The mayor retaliates by getting Michael fired, escalating the conflict between the town leadership and the Parker family.

Nicole begins a summer romance with Alex, and the two visit Ellen's house where they discover Ellen's body being devoured by lampreys in the pool. A police officer arrives on the scene and is eaten, forcing Cate and Nicole to escape. The sequence demonstrates the spread of the threat into private spaces.
