Bert Harris, a hotel bellboy, meets Anne Roberts, who signs up as a chambermaid. They quickly let Anne in on Bert's racket and plan their first con together. They arrange for a married hotel guest, A. Rupert Johnson Jr., to be caught in a compromising position and collect $5,000 to keep a fake policeman from taking him to jail.

They collect the payoff and leave town to pursue grander crooked schemes. The success of the first caper emboldens their partnership as they seek bigger opportunities. Their appetite for risk grows with each new con.

In a larger city, Bert falls in with Dapper Dan and Helen, fellow con artists. Dan asks Bert to front money for a counterfeit purchase, promising a big payoff. Dan and Helen abscond with his money, taunting him with a note left behind.
