Xiao Ma, who lost his sight in childhood and once attempted suicide, lives in a dreamlike state longing for connection. When Zhang Yiguang takes him to a hair salon, he meets Xiao Man, a young prostitute. Since he cannot see her, he becomes fixated on the idea of her, the possibility of love and intimacy that his isolated life has denied him. His obsession grows because it represents something tangible to grasp in his otherwise detached existence.

Xiao Ma's earlier fixation on Xiao Kong, calling her Sister-in-law, establishes his pattern of projecting desire onto unreachable women.

Xiao Ma is beaten by a client who resents his affection for Xiao Man. While the assault is violent and traumatic, it somehow restores partial vision to one of his eyes. The film presents this as a miraculous, ambiguous consequence, his vision returns but only partially, leaving him with blurred sight rather than full recovery.

When Du Hong rejects Sha's advances, she tells him he's in love with a concept rather than the real person. She means that Sha has idealized her beauty and mystery without truly knowing her, he loves the idea of her that he's constructed in his mind, not who she actually is. This reflects the film's theme that love requires honest participation from both people, not just admiration from a distance.

Du Hong's pride and elusiveness throughout the film establish her as someone who maintains clear boundaries.

Dr. Wang faces threats from loan sharks over his brother's debts. Rather than using his wedding savings to pay them off (which would jeopardize his future with Xiao Kong), he makes a desperate symbolic choice. He injures himself with a kitchen knife as an act of resistance, not to die, but to demonstrate that he will not be controlled by the debt collectors and will protect his relationship with Xiao Kong even at personal cost.

The mounting debt pressure has been building throughout the narrative, creating tension between duty and personal stakes.

Du Hong suffers a thumb injury during the violent aftermath of Xiao Ma's assault. After receiving donations from colleagues for her treatment, she feels she has become a burden to the clinic. Rather than continuing to rely on others' charity, she chooses to leave, believing her presence has become a liability. Her departure triggers the dissolution of the clinic's original family dynamic.

Du Hong has always maintained emotional distance from the clinic community, making her departure more plausible.

After the violent confrontation, Xiao Ma and Xiao Man flee together to an unknown destination. Later, it is revealed that Xiao Ma opens his own massage parlor with Xiao Man by his side as his partner and companion. Rather than returning to his previous detached existence, he builds a new life with her, gaining a sense of autonomy and partnership.

The hair salon encounter was meant to redirect his desires toward a legitimate connection.

Du Hong's departure is the final straw that breaks the clinic's cohesion. With her gone, the original community that Sha and Zhang Zongqi built begins to scatter. Dr. Wang and Xiao Kong relocate to Shenzhen, Sha retires, and the massage parlor that served as both workplace and home for the blind therapists dissolves. Her injury and subsequent resignation symbolize the fragility of their community.

The clinic has been presented as a fragile ecosystem dependent on the bonds between its members.

Xu Taihe struggles to openly express his love for Jin Yan, creating unspoken tension in their relationship. The film suggests his reticence stems from fear and pride, perhaps fear of rejection or fear of not being enough, and pride that prevents him from vulnerability. Their dynamic underscores the broader theme that communication can be as challenging as physical impairment, especially when emotional walls are taller than physical ones.

Their relationship is introduced early as one filled with longing but lacking words.

Xiao Ma is beaten by a customer who is angry about Xiao Ma's affection for Xiao Man. The client, possibly a regular or someone with power over Xiao Man, attacks Xiao Ma in the streets near the clinic as a violent rejection of their relationship. This confrontation represents the danger that comes with pursuing desire in a world that often denies it to those who are marginalized.
