Bingo Bongo (1982) – Full Plot Summary & Ending Explained

Read the complete plot breakdown of Bingo Bongo (1982), including all key story events, major twists, and the ending explained in detail. Discover what really happened—and what it all means.

The film opens with Bingo Bongo, Adriano Celentano, stranded in the African jungle after a plane crash, parachuted out at the last moment and adopted by a troop of chimpanzees, a situation that playfully nods to Tarzan while setting up a wild, comic premise.

Years later, as a grown man with animalistic behavior who still clings to a pacifier and wears a parachute harness, Bingo Bongo is unexpectedly captured by an expedition and brought to an anthropology institute in Milan for study, where he is kept in a cage. He proves not only to be incredibly strong and unusually intelligent and perceptive, but his presence also unsettles the researchers who try to understand him. Amid the chaos, he develops a crush on Laura, one of the scientists, and forms a strong bond with her pet chimpanzee Renato, who becomes a confidant and ally in this strangest of cross-species romances.

Laura, Carole Bouquet, makes it her mission to bridge the gap between Bingo Bongo and human society, drawing on patience, clever adjustments, and a genuine curiosity about what it means to belong. The narrative follows her attempts to reintegrate him, balancing scientific curiosity with a hopeful belief that he can navigate the human world without losing his core self.

As the story unfolds, Bingo Bongo escapes his cage and hides at Laura’s place, where slow progress begins to materialize. One evening, the institute’s director pays a casual visit, and Bingo Bongo astonishes everyone by passing himself off as a fully articulate human, even going so far as to present himself as Laura’s lover, a ruse that momentarily stuns the director and exposes the thin line between imitation and genuine connection.

Yet Laura’s gentle boundary-setting and refusal of his romantic advances push Bingo Bongo toward a renewed decision: he chooses to return to Africa, taking Renato with him, but the plan is complicated and foiled by forces both human and animal that resist his message.

In time, the world around Bingo Bongo comes to see him as a true ambassador of humanity for animals, a figure who can speak both animal and human tongues and who advocates for more humane treatment of animals everywhere. He returns to the institute, where he delivers a heartfelt colloquium that Laura herself attends, underscoring his enduring link to the world he seeks to unite. In a moment of tenderness, Laura confesses—in ape language—that she loves him after all, a revelation that reframes their relationship and the mission he has undertaken.

The film closes on a high, hopeful note as Bingo Bongo embraces his role as animal ambassador, with a memorable closing image of him calming King Kong, who later attends his wedding, signaling a playful, symbolic harmony between worlds that once seemed irreconcilable.
