Harry Palmer, Michael Caine, a former MI5 operative turned private investigator, receives a chilling directive from a cold mechanical voice over the phone: deliver a mysterious package to Helsinki. The package contains six virus-laden eggs, stolen from Porton Down, the United Kingdom’s government research facility. This ominous assignment drags him into a shadowy web of espionage where nothing is as it seems and trust is a scarce currency.
In Helsinki, a poised and enigmatic woman named Anya, Françoise Dorléac, meets him and guides him to Leo Newbigen, a man who once stood as Harry’s ally but now harbors a dangerous obsession with Anya. Leo Newbigen, Karl Malden, is emotionally entangled with Anya, yet Harry immediately senses that her professed affection is more calculation than devotion. The trio’s uneasy dynamic sets the stage for a deeper conspiracy that pulls Harry back into the British fold, despite his hard-won distance from espionage.
Harry’s mistrust proves justified when his former MI5 superior, Colonel Ross, abducts him and compels him to resume service in pursuit of the missing eggs. The operation unfolds inside a hidden room where a computer issues daily instructions to the local team, its voice eerily matching the summons that first drew Harry to Helsinki. The machine orders Leo to kill Anya, but Leo resists, choosing survival over brutal obedience. A scientist later assesses the eggs’ potential value, and Harry is formally introduced as a new operator, sliding back into the intelligence machine he hoped to leave behind.
The mission drives Harry to Latvia, then part of the Soviet sphere, where he joins a small band of rebels to gather crucial intelligence. After a brutal capture and a narrow escape that leaves him counted as dead, he is rescued by General Stok, an old contact from the KGB who reappears with a wary sense of purpose. Back in Helsinki, Anya attempts to kill Harry again—this time through seduction—only to confess that the computer’s orders dictated the assault. Harry binds her in a room and awaits Leo at the computer, where Leo offers to buy his silence with money, but Harry insists on receiving half of whatever Leo is siphoning from the larger conspiracy.
The trail leads to Texas, where Harry confronts oil magnate General Midwinter, a man who proclaims to command a vast “brain” of computers dispensing orders to operatives around the world. Midwinter’s grand design envisions a Latvia-wide rebellion that would topple global powers; he assumes Leo has coordinated hundreds of Latvian agents, but the truth is far smaller and far colder: Leo is siphoning off funds and hoarding the eggs. Midwinter finally grasps that Harry is a double agent of sorts, yet Harry convinces him that cooperation—rather than betrayal—offers the only chance to salvage the situation and track Leo down.
Reuniting in Helsinki, Leo and Anya attempt to move the eggs toward Moscow by train. Harry, flanked by two of Midwinter’s men, chases the train in a vehicle and detains Leo as the train nears the border. Anya opens fire on Harry’s bodyguards as the train pulls away; Leo chases after the moving train, but Anya retrieves the eggs and then viciously pushes Leo off the speeding carriage. Leo’s parting assessment to Harry is blunt: “She used me.” Yet the confrontation yields a possible path to stopping Midwinter’s reckless plan, if they can reach him in time.
Midwinter’s private army advances across the frozen Baltic Gulf in armored convoys disguised as oil-tankers, with the aim of invading Latvia and spreading chaos. Harry and Leo push to close the net, while Stok plans a counterstrike with strategic bombings that target the ice itself rather than the invading force. As their pursuit culminates, the ice cracks and the convey has no safe passage; the vehicles plunge into the freezing waters, taking Midwinter and his entourage to an icy grave.
Harry awakens on an isolated ice floe, where General Stok arrives in a helicopter with Anya by his side, presenting her as his agent. The eggs are handed back to Harry with a cryptic line that underscores the political calculus: “We don’t need them; we have our own ideas.” Returning to London, Harry delivers the package to Ross, who expects a standard career reward—promotion and recognition. But when Ross opens the carton, he discovers something entirely unexpected: the eggs are not eggs at all; they are full of chicks, a quiet, domestic twist that redefines the mission’s stakes and hints at a far more human outcome than the conspirators could ever anticipate. The long, interwoven plot leaves Harry navigating a precarious balance between loyalty, betrayal, and the search for a more humane end to a world dominated by machines, money, and power.
