Wealthy widow Helen Mercer hires young Gretchen Addison as her personal assistant and companion, unaware that Gretchen is part of a murderous extortionist duo with her boyfriend Jay. As Gretchen grows genuinely attached to Helen, she tries to abandon the scheme, but Jay refuses and proceeds. With the plot now in motion, both women find themselves in grave danger.
