In 2005, NASA uncovers a distant planet designated as Planet-G, which possesses Earth-like qualities. A powerful signal is transmitted from a communication array located in Hawaii, prompting further exploration.

Slacker Alex Hopper finds himself in hot water when he is arrested while attempting to impress Samantha Shane, the daughter of Admiral Terrance Shane. This incident highlights his aimlessness and lack of direction in life.

Frustrated by his brother's lifestyle, Commander Stone Hopper insists that Alex join the United States Navy. This pivotal decision marks the beginning of Alex's journey towards maturity and responsibility.

Fast forward to 2012, Alex Hopper has earned the rank of lieutenant aboard the USS John Paul Jones. Despite his relationship with Samantha, his disciplinary issues continue to jeopardize his military career.

As the USS John Paul Jones and USS Sampson prepare to embark on RIMPAC exercises in Hawaii, tensions rise when Alex confronts a Japanese naval officer, leading to a fight. His actions strain his relationship with Samantha.

During the naval exercises, five alien vessels appear in response to NASA's signal. The situation escalates when these crafts collide with an orbiting satellite and crash into the waters near Hawaii, creating chaos.

The USS John Paul Jones, USS Sampson, and Japan's Myoko become trapped by a force field generated by the alien mothership. This isolation from the rest of the fleet poses a significant threat to their survival.

In a fierce battle with the aliens, the Sampson and Myoko are quickly destroyed, resulting in severe damage to the John Paul Jones and the loss of its commanding officers. Alex finds himself thrust into a leadership role.

Meanwhile, Samantha assists retired Army veteran Mick Canales on a hike when they encounter scientist Cal Zapata. Cal warns them about the aliens' intent to communicate with their home planet using NASA's satellite, heightening the urgency of the situation.

The crew of the John Paul Jones manages to capture an alien, providing a critical opportunity to devise a strategy. Alex discovers that the aliens are sensitive to sunlight, which leads to a new plan of attack.

Alex collaborates with Captain Nagata to creatively engage the alien fleet using strategies reminiscent of a board game. Their efforts lead to the destruction of two alien ships, bolstering the crew's morale.

Determined to confront the alien threat, Alex and the remaining survivors successfully reactivate the decommissioned USS Missouri with assistance from veterans. They prepare to leverage the battleship's firepower in the ensuing battle.

In a climactic showdown, Alex and his crew expertly dodge alien fire while utilizing the Missouri's powerful main guns. Alex ultimately sacrifices the last shell to destroy the alien communications array, temporarily neutralizing their defenses.

After the battle, a ceremonial tribute is held for the navy personnel who sacrificed their lives. In a moment of courage, Alex asks Admiral Shane for Samantha’s hand in marriage, signaling his growth as a character.

The film concludes with a suspenseful post-credits scene set in Scotland. Children flee in fear as an ominous alien hand emerges from a broken object, suggesting that the threat may not be fully eliminated.
