Barbie Roberts pursues a dream of Broadway and signs up for a summer program at a prestigious performing Handler Arts Academy in New York City. Her family and friends back home in Malibu cheer her on as she arrives, where she’s helped by a flexible female student from Brooklyn. When they discover a dorm door with the name “Barbie Roberts,” they realize they share the same name and decide to become roommates, giving themselves location-based nicknames to keep things clear: Malibu [America Young] and Brooklyn [Amber Eliese May]. Their first days are filled with curiosity, rhythm, and a shared love of music as they explore New York City together.

On the subway, Malibu spots a poster of a pop star named Emmie [Giselle Fernández] and is starstruck, while Brooklyn hints that Emmie is an old childhood friend she’s not seen in years. The two Barbiе-named students vow not to let stardom strain their friendship as they navigate the academic world. Inside the academy, Emmie appears in disguise so she can be treated like a regular student. Dean Morrison announces that the annual Spotlight Solo will be livestreamed from Times Square, raising the stakes for every performer. A meeting with Rafa [Alejandro Saab], a costume student with his loyal dog Gato, introduces them to sequined dresses meant to dazzle, though a malfunctioning remote threatens to ruin the moment.

During the first week, Malibu struggles across classes, and Ken [Ritesh Rajan] checks in to see how she’s holding up, while Malibu grapples with the pressure of living up to expectations. The two Malibus eventually uncover Emmie’s disguise and, after a heartfelt conversation, rekindle their friendship. The trio—Malibu, Brooklyn, and Emmie—agree to guard Emmie’s secret, even as the stakes at the academy grow higher.

The two Barbie-names try on the shimmering dresses Rafa provided and head to Central Park to test them in daylight and in motion. Brooklyn shares with Malibu that her mother is a pilot and that her father worries about her adventures in the city, a sentiment that resonates with Malibu—whose own father feels uneasy about her NYC dreams. They take photos to send home, then dance and twirl by a fountain as the outfits glow with light. Mr. Miller arrives at the academy to observe the students, hoping Emmie will secure the Spotlight Solo, while Rafa records the class for posterity. In the chaos of a dance, Malibu accidentally knocks Brooklyn into an orchestra pit, and Brooklyn lands on a percussionist’s drum, injuring her ankle.

Feeling the weight of the accident, Malibu is devastated but remains buoyant with the support of friends who remind her to stay hopeful. The situation escalates when a witness reveals the truth, and Dean Morrison expels Malibu from the academy for allegedly sabotaging Brooklyn. The two Barbiе-names drift apart in their disappointment, each lamenting the loss of their friendship. Rafa uncovers Mr. Miller’s involvement, prompting Emmie to confront her father, and Brooklyn to share the troubling footage with Dean Morrison.

Returning home to California, Malibu battles guilt and contemplates giving up music. Brooklyn and her mother, seeing her pain, travel to California to mend the rift and bring Malibu back to the academy. Their reconciliation leads to the rediscovery of their shared dream, and they are thrilled to learn they have earned the Spotlight Solo.

On the big night, Emmie’s true identity is finally revealed during the livestream, and she introduces the now-united Barbie duo. In their sparkling, lit-up outfits, they perform a ballad about their friendship journey, titled “See You at the Finish Line,” while family and friends watch live from Times Square. As the music swells, Malibu and Brooklyn clasp hands in a show of solidarity, and fireworks erupt above the city’s iconic skyline, signaling that their friendship—and their shared dream—has triumphed.
