In a small industrial town near Bombay, Bholanath works at a mill with his wife Gauri and children Champa and Ramaiya, the town’s sole arts graduate. When Bholanath loses his job, Ramaiya takes a low‑level job at the same mill, earns workers’ trust and becomes union leader. His activism pits him against the owner, Kapoor, who frames him for theft, prompting Ramaiya to go into hiding.
