Manju Manju grows up in a dysfunctional family, with a timid father and a mother whose wandering affections leave a mark of cynicism on her. She hops from one disastrous romance to another, drifting into a hard-edged view of men and a habit of expecting the worst. In this unsettled world, two radically different men enter her life. One is her boss, Thyagu, the hard-edged owner of the advertising agency she works for—money-minded, opinionated, arrogant, and a clear example of male chauvinism. In sharp contrast stands Arun, a gentle and sincere filmmaker who has come to Madras from Coimbatore to make a documentary about women. He believes his work can matter, and he approaches Manju with a curiosity that unsettles and then compels her.

Manju is drafted by Thyagu to help Arun on his project, and as the two begin collaborating, Arun starts to see the layers behind her abrasive exterior. She opens up about a troubling past: she was molested by her uncle, her college relationship collapsed when her lover chose to marry another woman for a chance at employment, and her second romance, Mano, a Christian priest’s son, used her and publicly dismissed her, calling her “sister” in front of her parents. These memories shape the present, coloring her attitudes toward men and fueling her insistence that she must protect herself. Arun takes these conversations to Thyagu, who cautions him to steer clear of such women.

Arun finds himself drawn to Manju, and soon he falls in love. Yet trouble brews when Thyagu overhears Manju reproaching her office staff for comments about her character. The tension escalates; Manju resigns from her job after Thyagu’s criticism, and Arun pleads for her to be re-hired. Thyagu’s smug assurance that she’s already back is a bitter moment, and Manju’s defenses begin to crack as she appears to flirt with Thyagu’s interest. Arun, increasingly unsettled, is confronted with the troubling possibility that Manju embodies the very traits Thyagu had warned him about—opportunistic, money-driven, and fickle. When asked about this contradiction, she evasively asserts that this is simply how she is and will remain.

The truth emerges with painful clarity: Manju had been baiting Thyagu to teach him a lesson. As Thyagu begins to believe that Manju has fallen for him, he makes a move at a party banquet, only to be rebuked and slapped by her, sending him fleeing in fear. But this revelation comes too late for Manju’s relationship with Arun; he has already married a small-town girl, disillusioned by the way things have unfolded. When Manju tells her aunt about the humiliation attempt and its consequences, the elder woman bluntly says Manju deserved the fallout for letting a real opportunity slip away.

In the final moments, a car conversation with Thyagu unfolds in the presence of Arun’s wife. Manju asks a pointed question about gender and liberation, and the moment is rendered in quiet, chilling clarity. > What do you think of women’s liberation? Arun’s wife, calmly, says she does not know. Manju’s bitter retort follows, implying that such uncertainty is the reason some people stay content with the status quo. After this, Manju is absent from the screen, and the narrative ends with a stark, haunting voice-over: Manju died today, but will be reborn tomorrow, only for the cycle to repeat—and that is how she is.

Within this tale, the flashback fragments and the evolving relationship between Manju and Arun sit alongside the push-pull dynamic with Thyagu, offering a meditation on desire, power, and the ways in which past wounds color present choices. The film uses intimate conversations and sharp social observations to dissect how hurt and vulnerability can masquerade as strength, and how a cycle of attraction, manipulation, and disappointment can define a life. The closing imagery and voice-over leave the audience with a sense that Manju’s life is less a single arc than a recurring pattern—one that asks bigger questions about liberation, agency, and the possibility of genuine change in a world set in motion by old habits and unfinished hurt. In the end, the story remains rooted in its human tensions—the longing for connection, the fear of exposure, and the enduring question of what it means for a woman to claim her own power within a society that often defines her by her relationships with men.
