In 50 BC, most of Gaul has fallen under Roman control, but the tiny village of Asterix and his companions continue to defy the legions, thanks to a magical potion brewed by their druid that grants temporary superhuman strength. When a Roman centurion learns of the brew, he captures the druid in an attempt to force him to reveal the secret formula.

Forest ambush and the hunt for the Gauls' secret

Asterix and the Gauls are ambushed by a large band of Roman legionaries in the forest. Asterix defeats the ambush, leaving the Romans bruised and frustrated. Phonus Balonus, their leader, becomes obsessed with uncovering the Gauls' rumored superhuman strength and vows to discover its secret.

Phonus's plan to infiltrate the Gauls

Phonus Balonus devises a plan to spy on the Gauls by selecting a volunteer through a musical chairs-style contest. Caligula Minus, a slack-tongued misfit, is dressed in a wig and false moustache and led in chains as a prisoner. Asterix and Obelix free Minus, who insists he is a Gaul from Lutetia.

Minus enters the Gaul village in disguise

Minus is brought into the Gaul village wearing a wig, false moustache, and Gaulish dress, and is led in chains as a prisoner. He pretends to be a Gaul from Lutetia to blend in. His cover remains shaky as the plot unfolds.

Minus goads Asterix into sharing the secret of the magic potion, and Getafix agrees to let him try it. During a traditional dance, Asterix accidentally pulls off Minus's false moustache, blowing his cover. Still empowered by the potion, the Gauls are unable to prevent Minus's escape.

Minus is debriefed by Phonus Balonus, who orders his legionaries to capture Getafix. The Romans set out to seize the druid and learn the recipe behind the Gauls' strength.

Getafix is ambushed by Roman troops while collecting mistletoe in the forest, but he refuses to divulge the secrets of his magic potion. Asterix decides to search for Getafix, determined to bring him back to the Gauls.

A slow-witted merchant offers to take Asterix to the Roman camp in a cart, hidden in a pile of hay until nightfall. The journey takes place as a covert transport, allowing him to slip inside the camp and search for Getafix.

Believing the potion is the key to victory, the Romans drink Getafix's brew and discover it is a hair-growing formula. The entire legion becomes covered in hair and beard growth, rendering them clumsy and helpless. The Gauls seize the moment to take control.

Getafix relents and prepares a different potion that he claims will reverse the effects. He also gathers ingredients for the true magic potion and an apparent 'antidote' in the form of vegetable soup. The plan is to overpower their captors and escape.

Caesar arrives and ends the threat

Julius Caesar makes a surprise visit to the camp and is appalled by the chaos. He asks to meet the Gauls and learns of Phonus's plot to overthrow him. Caesar relieves Phonus of duty and grants Asterix and Getafix their freedom.
