Armageddon Time

In 1980, Paul Graff begins sixth grade in Queens, New York City. This moment marks not only his entry into a new academic year but also the start of significant friendships, especially with a rebellious classmate named Johnny Davis.

On his first day of school, Paul quickly bonds with Johnny, who has repeated a year. Paul relates to Johnny's struggles with discipline, often finding himself lost in his own creativity rather than sticking to his studies.

At home, Paul enjoys a loving relationship with his grandfather, Aaron, who encourages his artistic aspirations. Paul's traditional parents, Esther and Irving, don't fully support his dreams, creating tension in the household.

Paul cherishes the stories his grandfather tells him about their family's history. Aaron shares tales of his own mother fleeing antisemitism in Ukraine, emphasizing the importance of resilience in the face of adversity.

Paul and Johnny are caught smoking a joint in the school restroom, an event that leads to severe consequences. Paul’s mother, Esther, reacts angrily and permits Irving to discipline Paul, which complicates their family dynamics.

In an attempt to instill discipline, Paul's parents transfer him to Forest Manor Prep, where his older brother Ted studies. This change is compelled by the belief that a more structured environment will straighten Paul out.

At Forest Manor, Paul feels isolated despite the prestigious environment and the presence of influential figures like Fred Trump, who supports the school. Paul’s sense of alienation intensifies due to the racist remarks directed at him when Johnny visits during recess.

To avoid the foster care system, Johnny secretly moves into Paul’s clubhouse, deepening their bond. This arrangement highlights the struggles they both face and their continued desire to support one another amidst their turbulent lives.

During a park visit, Paul confides in Aaron about the difficulties he faces, expressing feelings of helplessness in confronting the pervasive racism at school. Aaron encourages Paul to challenge injustice, sharing wisdom from their family's experiences.

The Graff family is struck by tragedy when Aaron succumbs to bone cancer. This loss not only devastates Paul but also amplifies his feelings of isolation and pressure from both family and society.

In a desperate attempt to escape his painful reality, Paul devises a plan to steal a computer from school. He hopes to sell it and gain enough money to change his circumstances, showcasing his frustration and hopelessness.
