Anne of the Indies

Anne spares LaRochelle after seizing a British ship because he was a Frenchman captured by the British, not an enemy combatant. She sees him as a potential recruit rather than a prisoner worth executing, and his handsomeness sparks a mutual attraction that leads her to invite him onto her crew.

Blackbeard instantly dislikes LaRochelle because he recognizes him from his past in the French navy, specifically remembering seeing him during an incident where a pirate was hanged. Although Blackbeard initially conceals his suspicion, he knows LaRochelle's background does not match what a former pirate would typically have.

Anne sides with LaRochelle because she has fallen in love with him and believes his claim that he was merely dismissed from the French navy. When Blackbeard attacks LaRochelle, Anne defends him and banishes Blackbeard from her crew, choosing her romantic feelings over her mentor's warnings.

LaRochelle is secretly a former French navy officer who has been working for the British. His own ship was captured by the British, which forced him into cooperation with them. He also has a wife whom the audience learns about only after his betrayal is exposed.

LaRochelle betrays Anne because he is secretly working for the British, having been coerced after his own ship was captured. He uses his position in Anne's crew to lead the British to attack her vessel, fulfilling his obligation to the authorities while attempting to regain his freedom.

During the British attack on her ship, Anne manages to escape and takes LaRochelle's wife hostage as leverage. This gives her bargaining power and ensures LaRochelle cannot freely pursue her without risking his wife's life.

A few days after marooning them, Anne's conscience compels her to return with provisions and a small boat. She cannot leave them to die despite his betrayal, showing that even after being wounded emotionally, she retains her capacity for mercy.

When Blackbeard attacks as Anne returns to the island, she stays to fight rather than flee because her primary goal is to prevent Blackbeard from finding LaRochelle and his wife. She knows her ship is outmatched but chooses to sacrifice herself to protect the couple she just saved.

Anne challenges Blackbeard to a final personal duel, relying on courage rather than firepower. Before the duel can be resolved, she is killed by a deadly salvo from Blackbeard's ship. Blackbeard attempts to stop his cannoneers but is too late, and she dies as the last survivor of her crew.

From aboard their ship, LaRochelle and his wife witness Anne's ultimate sacrifice, she dies protecting them from Blackbeard. This act transforms their understanding of her, as the woman who betrayed them becomes the one who gave her life for their survival, leading them to pay tribute to her bravery.
