Annaamalai Rajinikanth is a kind-hearted milkman living in Madras, whose simple life is bound up in a steadfast, childhood friendship with Ashok Sarath Babu, the ambitious owner of a five-star hotel. Their bond is tested from the start by Ashok’s powerful father, Gangadharan Radha Ravi, who resents his son’s closeness to a man of modest means. Annaamalai is gentle and principled, and his heart leads him to marry Subbulakshmi, a college girl he loves, while Ashok falls for Shanthi Rekha, who works as his secretary. When Annaamalai helps arrange Ashok and Shanthi’s wedding, Gangadharan’s pride is wounded, and he begins to plot against the marriage, doubting Shanthi’s status as a potential daughter-in-law.
The tale pivots on land and loyalty. Annaamalai’s tiny house and a scrap of land sit on prime real estate that Gangadharan wants to clear for Ashok’s hotel ambitions. Ashok, torn between business interests and friendship, is initially reluctant but ultimately agrees to buy the land. Annaamalai, moved by their friendship, accepts and even offers the land free of charge, a gesture that should cement their bond. Ashok, proud of his friend, proposes making Annaamalai a shareholder in the new hotel. Gangadharan counters with a darker plan, drawing Annaamalai into a trap by securing his signature on papers that are nothing more than blanks.
The star hotel rises, and with it the unraveling of trust. Gangadharan schemes to demolish Annaamalai’s humble house beside the new project, and he, with Ashok’s cousin Sargunam, forges documents to seize control of Annaamalai’s land. When Annaamalai confronts the truth, Ashok, unaware of his father’s machinations, lashes out in anger and even destroys Annaamalai’s house, a blow deeply tied to the memory of Annaamalai’s father. In response, Annaamalai issues a new, quiet challenge: he will become wealthy and exact his revenge, not through bitterness, but through persistence and shrewd enterprise. Ekambaram Vinu Chakravarthy steps in to help, opening a path for Annaamalai to start anew.
From that point, the rags-to-riches arc begins in earnest. Annaamalai launches a modest sweets business and, through fifteen years of relentless toil, climbs to the top of Madras’s hotel scene. He builds a gleaming star hotel that draws crowds away from Ashok’s establishment, while Sargunam steals money from Ashok, only to eventually join Annaamalai’s growing empire and even marry Kamala, Annaamalai’s sister. Annaamalai rises to the presidency of the hotel association, and Ashok finds himself squeezed by financial troubles. Personal lines blur as Annaamalai learns of his daughter Priya’s affection for Deepak, Ashok’s son, and he resists this union out of lingering enmity.
The plot thickens at a public auction of a plot of land. In a calculated move that only their long history could justify, Annaamalai tricks Ashok into bidding an absurd amount—₹120 million—though the land’s worth is far less. Ashok is forced to sell his own bungalow to cover the debt, and Annaamalai purchases it, but then hands the registration to Sivagami Manorama, Ashok’s mother, so he does not permanently damage their old friendship. Realizing the depth of deception, Ashok and Gangadharan apologize to Sivagami, seeking to repair the rift.
The villainy does not end there. Annaamalai uncovers the forgery surrounding the land deal and learns that Sargunam has even hired an assassin, Don [Prabhakar], to kill Ashok and seize the wealth for himself. In a tense confrontation, Annaamalai intervenes, defeats Don, and spares Ashok’s life. With the threat neutralized, the two men reconcile, and the tale closes on a hopeful note as they agree to set aside past grudges and secure a future for their children’s union. The friendship that began in childhood, tempered by struggle and triumph, ultimately forgives and endures.
