What Happens in Aníkúlápó: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of Aníkúlápó (2022) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

Aníkúlápó tells the story of Kunle Remi as Saro, a stranger who arrives in Oyo working as a traditional textile weaver skilled in the aso-ofi technique. While there, Saro enters into a forbidden romance with Queen Bimbo Ademoye as Arolake. Arolake is trapped in an unhappy marriage, feeling disconnected from her older husband and facing constant hostility from the other queens due to the king's favoritism toward her.

As the couple plans to elope, their secret affair is discovered, leading the king to sentence Saro to death. However, through the clever actions of Arolake and the myth of the Akala bird, Saro is brought back from the grave. Arolake steals a mystical gourd that grants Saro the extraordinary power to resurrect the dead, earning him the title Aníkúlápó—meaning the "one that holds death in his purse."

The couple settles in the village of Ojumo, where Saro's fame grows. However, his new power leads to hubris and arrogance. He begins to betray Arolake's trust by pursuing other women and making greedy demands from the villagers in exchange for his services. The situation reaches a breaking point when Saro demands the king's daughter as a condition to restore the life of the king's heir. Outraged by his betrayal and pride, Arolake undermines the source of his mystical power and deserts him. Ultimately, Saro fails to resurrect the prince, discovering that he has lost his ability to tame death.

Aníkúlápó Plot Explained: Your Questions Answered

The questions people ask most about Aníkúlápó (2022): what happens in the confusing scenes, why the characters do what they do, the twists, hidden details and what the ending means. Each answer contains spoilers.

Q1

How is Saro brought back to life after his execution?

In Aníkúlápó, a mystical Akala bird awakens Saro from the grave after his execution. Arolake's theft of the mystical gourd gives him the power to raise the dead, turning his second chance into the identity of a man who can master death.

  • saro
  • akala bird
  • resurrection
  • mystical gourd
  • arolake
Q2

Why does Queen Arolake fall in love with Saro?

Arolake falls for Saro because he offers the genuine affection missing from her loveless marriage to the aging king. She feels trapped by duty and resents his constant attention, while the older queens' jealousy over his favoritism leaves her isolated.

Foreshadowing: The earlier scenes of Arolake's loveless marriage and the older queens' hostility show why she is vulnerable to Saro's affection.

  • saro
  • forbidden romance
  • unhappy marriage
  • royal court
Q3

Why does the king sentence Saro to death?

The king sees Saro's affair with Arolake as a direct betrayal of his authority and punishes him with death. Because their elopement plan depends on secrecy, the exposure of the affair leaves the couple with no escape.

Foreshadowing: Their secret plans to elope show the danger they face if the affair is discovered.

Q4

Why does Saro demand the king's daughter in exchange for the prince?

Saro's fame has made him arrogant enough to treat resurrection as a bargaining tool instead of a duty. When the desperate king needs his son restored, Saro uses that leverage to demand the king's daughter as the price of saving the prince.

Foreshadowing: Saro's earlier demands for payment from Ojumo's villagers show that he has already begun using his gift as leverage.

  • saro
  • king
  • daughter
  • prince
  • resurrection bargain
  • arrogance
Q5

Why does Saro fail to resurrect the prince?

Saro fails because Arolake has undermined the gourd, the source of the power that lets him raise the dead. His second life and his public identity depend on that object, so her sabotage removes his ability to restore the prince.

Foreshadowing: Ojumo's dependence on Saro's resurrections makes the gourd the foundation of the reputation he later loses.

  • prince
  • resurrection failure
  • arolake
  • gourd
Q6

How does Arolake take away Saro's power?

After hearing Saro's demand for the king's daughter, Arolake deliberately undermines the mystical gourd. She then leaves Saro, stripping away both the source of his supernatural power and the relationship that gave him a second life.

Foreshadowing: Arolake's earlier theft of the gourd for Saro makes her later sabotage a reversal of the help she gave him.

  • arolake
  • saro
  • mystical gourd
  • loss of power

Q7

Why does Saro become arrogant in Ojumo?

As Saro's ability to raise the dead spreads through Ojumo, fame and dependence turn him into a powerful figure. He begins pursuing other women and demanding payment from villagers, allowing pride and greed to replace his earlier humility as a weaver.

  • saro
  • hubris
  • ojumo

Q8

What does Saro's new name mean?

Saro's new name, Aníkúlápó, means "one that holds death in his purse," describing his power to keep death in the gourd and restore the dead. The name marks his transformation from an executed weaver into someone treated as a master of life and death.

  • saro
  • new name meaning
  • death in his purse

Q9

Why does the prince's death lead to Saro's final demand?

When the king's heir dies, the desperate king turns to Saro because he believes Aníkúlápó is the only person who can restore the prince. The crisis puts Saro's inflated pride and control over resurrection on direct display, leading to his demand for the king's daughter.

Foreshadowing: Saro's earlier coercive demands over resurrection show that he is already willing to exploit people who need him.

  • prince
  • king
  • royal heir
  • saro
  • final demand
Q10

Why does Saro betray Arolake after she saves him?

Saro is distracted by the fame and power he gains in Ojumo, and he begins pursuing other women instead of honoring Arolake's sacrifice. His infidelity and greed overturn the loyalty that once bound him to the woman who brought him back from death.

Foreshadowing: Arolake's rescue of Saro establishes the loyalty he later violates when he pursues other women.

  • betrayal
  • infidelity

Q11

Why do Saro and Arolake settle in Ojumo?

They settle in Ojumo to escape the king's punishment and build a life together outside Oyo. For Arolake, it also offers a way to remain with the resurrected Saro, whose supernatural ability begins to draw attention in the new community.

Foreshadowing: Their plan to elope before the affair was exposed shows their shared wish to build a life beyond the king's reach.

Q12

What happens to Saro and Arolake in the end?

Arolake leaves Saro after sabotaging his power, and the prince remains dead. The ending of Aníkúlápó denies the couple the peaceful new life they planned, leaving Saro exposed in Ojumo and powerless while Arolake is gone.

Foreshadowing: The couple's early plan to elope is the life that the final separation denies them.

More Movies Like Aníkúlápó, by Mood & Story

Curated lists built around what makes Aníkúlápó tick: the same mood, the same kind of story or the same emotional payoff. Each list explains why these movies belong together.

Movies like Aníkúlápó: forbidden love, fatal power, and tragic loss

Passionate romances where love defies power and ends in devastating loss. If you liked Aníkúlápó, discover movies like Aníkúlápó in which forbidden passion collides with royal power, betrayal, and death. These emotionally heavy romances center sincere love, impossible choices, and separations that leave little room for happiness, easy consolation, or a reassuring happily-ever-after.

  • forbidden love
  • doomed romance
  • passionate
  • fatalistic
  • heartbreaking
  • courtly intrigue
  • Tone: bittersweet, tragic, fatalistic
  • Pacing: variable, intimate to sweeping
Why these movies?

The story pattern: A romantic bond begins with real connection, then crosses boundaries of duty, status, or morality. External punishment or loss forces the lovers apart, and any chance at reunion carries a further cost. The story closes less on love itself than on the tragic distance, obligations, and mortality that love cannot overcome.

Why they belong together: These movies are grouped by an emotionally central romance that feels authentic even when its outcome is hopeless. Court intrigue, supernatural danger, betrayal, or fatalistic rules intensify the bond rather than making it sentimental, while the bleaker conclusion preserves the bittersweet memory of what might have been.

Movies like Aníkúlápó: supernatural power, hubris, and mythic downfall

Mythic tales where wonder becomes obsession, power turns corruptive, and downfall follows. Find movies like Aníkúlápó featuring mystical gifts, resurrection, or impossible transformations and a protagonist whose misuse of power drives the tragedy. These sweeping, somber fantasies pair folkloric wonder with mounting hubris, failed rescues, irreversible loss, and bleak conclusions without consolation or reconciliation.

  • supernatural power
  • hubris
  • mythic
  • fatalistic
  • somber
  • rise and fall
  • Tone: somber, mythic, fatalistic
  • Pacing: variable, steadily escalating
Why these movies?

The story pattern: A gift or second chance gives a protagonist a temporary escape from death or limitation. It solves a severe problem, but each use strengthens dependence and ambition. Success masks the cost until the character attempts one final, larger intervention. That choice exposes the hubris behind the power and leaves only failure, separation, or ruin.

Why they belong together: Each film uses a mythic mechanism to test character rather than merely reward it. The supernatural element creates wonder and possibility, while its escalating misuse produces a clear rise-and-fall structure. Shared fatalism, somber tone, heavy emotional stakes, and endings without consolation make the grouping cohesive beyond fantasy alone.
