In autumn 1962, Larry Kroger and Kent Dorfman arrive at Delta Tau Chi as pledges after being blocked from Omega Theta Pi. They are welcomed into the house and quickly nicknamed Pinto and Flounder as they plunge into fraternity life. The stage is set for a year of wild camaraderie and hazing.

The Delta house is already on probation for mischief and poor grades. Dean Wormer doubles their probation and pressures Omega Marmalard to find a pretext to revoke Delta’s charter. The tension between the fraternities starts to intensify.

A string of pranks and skirmishes escalates the conflict with Omega. During a retaliation against the bullying of a ROTC member, Neidermeyer’s horse dies, deepening hostilities on campus. The Delta brothers feel the consequences of their rebellious streak.

Otter Stratton begins an affair with Mandy Pepperidge, Omega Marmalard’s girlfriend. The romance complicates loyalties and fuels the bitter rivalry between the houses. The affair adds another layer to the brewing conflict at Faber College.

Bluto and D-Day swipe the midterm answers from the trash, only to learn Omegas swapped them with a fake. The Deltas fail the exam, dropping their GPAs and prompting Wormer to warn that another misstep could revoke the charter. The stakes rise as academic failure threatens their future at Delta.

In defiance, Otter, Boon, Pinto, and Flounder steal away in a borrowed Lincoln and drive to a club where Otis Day and the Knights perform. They hope to crash the club's crowd, but the predominantly African-American audience forces them to flee amid vandalized cars and clashes. The misadventure underscores the social chaos surrounding Delta’s rebellion.

The morning after reveals Katy spent the night with English professor Dave Jennings, complicating relationships. Babs Jansen informs Marmalard that Mandy and Otter have been involved, intensifying Wormer’s punitive plans. The fallout compounds the members' precarious situation at Delta.
