The Drop

The film opens with a montage that describes the concept of a drop bar, a crucial location for gathering money collected from various mob-run businesses. This drop bar is utilized by the Chechen mafia, and its location is revealed to always be shifting, highlighting the secretive and dynamic nature of mob operations.

Bob Saginowski, the main character, works as a bartender at a local bar named Cousin Marv's in Brooklyn. During a typical evening, regular patrons toast to Richie, a young man who passed away ten years prior, much to Cousin Marv's irritation as he grapples with his fading fame and frustration over Bob's leniency towards disruptive patrons.

One fateful night, Bob discovers a whimpering pit bull abandoned in a trash can and is soon approached by the dog's owner, Nadia. Together, they evaluate the dog’s injuries, and despite Bob's hesitance in caring for the animal, he promises to return in a few days while Nadia captures his license plate, hinting at a deeper interest.

Bob attends church services, contributing to a small congregation where he notices fellow parishioner Detective Torres. Inspired by the statue of Saint Rocco, he shares his lack of experience with pets with Nadia, revealing his insecurities while building their growing connection.

After their church visit, Bob and Nadia go to the pet store to buy essentials for the injured dog, whom they name Rocco. This trip solidifies their partnership as they navigate responsibilities together, deepening their bond amidst the growing challenges they face.

Chovka, the menacing face of the Chechen mob, confronts Cousin Marv and Bob after capturing a robber and cruelly impaling his foot. This encounter elevates the tension as Marv panics over the disappearance of money, leaving Bob to navigate a perilous situation filled with mob threats.

As Bob and Nadia take Rocco for a walk in the park, they share their personal histories. Nadia reveals her struggles with drug addiction, deepening their connection and showcasing the complexities of their characters amidst the backdrop of violence and chaos surrounding them.
