Shanthanu was expelled from the Navy because of his relationship with Nadira Imam. When they were discovered kissing, Jaffer Imam (Nadira's brother) witnessed the moment and beat Shanthanu brutally. At the court hearing, Nadira openly admitted to the relationship, confirming the Navy's concerns about the fraternization. Since Nadira was only fifteen years old at the time, the relationship violated military regulations and naval conduct codes, resulting in both Shanthanu and Nadira being dismissed from service.

Dheeraj Iyengar, who was caught with fake documents on Shanthanu's arrival in Kavaratti, is actually Naseeb Imam, Nadira's younger brother. He had been living under the fake identity of Dheeraj Iyengar. The reveal shifts the stakes of Shanthanu's search, as Naseeb becomes a crucial link between Shanthanu and Nadira, eventually helping reunite them.

Nadira's father was Shanthanu's commanding officer in the Navy, giving him a position of authority over Shanthanu. Beyond the professional hierarchy, Nadira was only fifteen years old when the relationship began, while Shanthanu was an adult Navy officer. This significant age gap, combined with the breach of military protocol and his role as both father and commanding officer, made the relationship unacceptable to him.

At the 2004 Navy Fest, Shanthanu performed a melody that captivated Nadira, who was dancing. During a power cut that occurred while they were together, Zachariah caused trouble, leading to both Shanthanu and Zachariah receiving red marks on their academic records. This event also sparked rumors about their relationship, complicating Shanthanu's standing in the Navy before the more serious court proceedings.

Shanthanu left the Navy because the court proceedings following his relationship with Nadira resulted in their dismissal from service. After Shanthanu recovers and reunites with Nadira, they visit a religious site where a man remarks that their names echo the legendary lovers Prince Salim and Anarkali. This reference parallels their own story - a love hindered by authority, separation, and social barriers, but ultimately enduring. The comparison frames their reunion as a timeless, fated love that overcame similar obstacles to the historical Anarkali legend.

Jaffer Imam is Nadira's brother, and he violently beat Shanthanu after witnessing him kiss Nadira. As a family member and Navy officer, Jaffer viewed the relationship between his underage sister and the Navy officer as a serious transgression. The beating and subsequent court involvement were consequences of the family's strong disapproval of the relationship due to Nadira's age and Shanthanu's position in the Navy.

During the Navy Fest incident, Zachariah caused trouble that resulted in both himself and Shanthanu receiving red marks on their records. This past tension caused Zachariah to hide when Shanthanu first arrived in Kavaratti, though they eventually reconciled as Zachariah helped Shanthanu in his search for Nadira.
