Due to pressure from her mother, she is married at the age of nine to Gopalrao Joshi, a widower nearly twenty years her senior. Her husband renames her “Anandi,” and together they embark on a life that blends hardship with a growing appetite for change. He works as a postal clerk in Kalyan, later transfers the family to Alibaug, and finally moves them to Kolhapur, all while nurturing a progressive stance that champions education for women.

At fourteen, Anandi endures a profound tragedy: she gives birth to a son who lives for only ten days, a heartbreaking outcome largely tied to the scarce medical care available to their family. This loss becomes a turning point, sharpening her resolve to pursue medicine. When Gopalrao attempts to enroll her in missionary schools without immediate success, the couple relocates to Calcutta, where Anandi begins to broaden her horizons by learning Sanskrit and English. Her husband’s encouragement grows into a steadfast belief in her potential to study medicine, a belief that will push them toward audacious paths.

In a pivotal move, Gopalrao writes to Royal Wilder, a well-known American missionary, outlining his wife’s interest in medical study in the United States and inquiring about suitable opportunities for himself. Wilder’s response reaches Theodicia Carpenter in Roselle, New Jersey, who is deeply touched by the couple’s story and forms a bond with Anandi—an arrangement that will later be framed as “aunt” and “niece” in their correspondence. Carpenter’s support becomes a bridge to opportunities abroad, and the connection eventually helps bring Anandi to the West.

Back in India, the health of Anandi is fragile. She experiences chronic weakness, headaches, fever, and breathlessness, while their circumstances in Serampore intensify the strain. In 1883, Gopalrao makes a bold decision to send Anandi to America for medical training despite her frail health and the disapproval she faces from orthodox segments of Indian society. He insists that she set a powerful example for other women by choosing higher education, even as the journey ahead carries risks.

A turning point arrives when physicians Thorburn and his colleagues recommend that Anandi apply to the Woman’s Medical College of Pennsylvania, one of the world’s earliest institutions dedicated to training women physicians. His decision to pursue this path, and Anandi’s willingness to endure skepticism and social censure, highlight a drive to address the dire need for female doctors in India—especially to serve Hindu women who could best relate to their patients’ experiences. Anandi articulates her purpose in a public speech at Serampore College Hall, recounting the persecution she and her husband had faced and underscoring why a medical education is essential for Indian women. The speech garners wide publicity and draws generous contributions from across the country, signaling a powerful wave of support for her mission.

Anandi travels from Calcutta to New York in 1883, aided by Carpenter and two English missionary acquaintances who accompany her. In New York, she is welcomed by Carpenter and begins her formal medical education at the Woman’s Medical College of Pennsylvania, under the careful guidance of dean Rachel Bodley. She enters this demanding program at the age of nineteen, facing the harsh realities of cold weather, unfamiliar food, and a climate that worsens her health. Despite these challenges, she perseveres and earns her MD in March 1886, producing a thesis titled “Obstetrics among the Aryan Hindoos,” which blends references from Ayurvedic sources with American medical texts. Her graduation is marked by a formal acknowledgment from Queen Victoria, underscoring the extraordinary significance of her achievement.

Throughout her journey, Anandi’s story is one of resilience, purpose, and the conviction that education can unlock new possibilities for women in India. Her triumph not only expands the boundaries of medical education for women but also serves as an inspiring beacon for future generations of Indian doctors.
