In 1968, the story revolves around Ellsworth “Bumpy” Johnson (portrayed by Clarence Williams III), a shrewd and disciplined gangster who holds considerable sway over Harlem. He mentors Frank Lucas (Denzel Washington), his former chauffeur, eventually promoting him to his loyal second-in-command. Everything changes when Bumpy suffers a fatal heart attack while shopping at an electronics store. With the old guard gone and flashy newcomers vying for control of Harlem’s underbelly, Frank decides it’s time to claim power for himself.

On the law enforcement side, Detective Richie Roberts (Russell Crowe) faces his own set of challenges, battling a crumbling marriage, night classes in law school, and the pressures of his job. While working with his partner Javier Rivera (John Ortiz), Richie uncovers nearly $1 million in unmarked cash. Instead of succumbing to temptation, he returns the money, which earns him disdain within his precinct and leads to Javier’s dismissal from the force. Amidst the chaos of his personal life—including rampant womanizing that prompts his wife to file for divorce—Richie gets assigned to lead a new task force targeting drug trafficking in Essex County, focusing on identifying suppliers instead of mere street dealers.

As it turns out, Frank Lucas is the one supplying the potent new heroin known as “Blue Magic.” After Bumpy’s death, Frank capitalizes on an opportunity, sourcing heroin directly from Thailand. This strategy allows him to dominate the drug market with a superior product sold at a lower price, which he smuggles through U.S. soldiers returning from the Vietnam War. Establishing a brand named “Blue Magic,” he builds a drug empire, buying nightclubs and luxurious properties while relocating his family to New Jersey, where they enjoy a lavish lifestyle.

Frank’s criminal empire is not without its dangers. While he initially emphasizes a low-profile lifestyle, a luxurious night at the Fight of the Century between Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier catches the eye of Richie, who is also present as part of his police duties. Recognizing Frank’s conspicuous wealth and connections to organized crime, Roberts starts to dig deeper.

As Frank’s stature rises, he finds himself navigating a treacherous world populated by the Mafia and corrupt police officers, including Detective Nick Trupo (Josh Brolin). Tensions escalate when Frank retaliates against Trupo after he confronts Frank during his honeymoon, setting in motion a chain of violent confrontations. Meanwhile, competing drug dealer Nicky Barnes (Cuba Gooding, Jr.) begins to dilute Frank’s product, threatening his operation further still.

The situation becomes dire when Frank’s supply chain is disrupted due to the Fall of Saigon, leading to heightened tensions within his ranks. He grapples with whether to continue operating in the shadows or to take decisive action against those challenging his authority. Just when it seems that things couldn’t get worse, Richie gets a break when they catch Frank’s cousin engaging in illegal activities, which leads to a significant police operation to intercept a drug shipment.

In a climactic showdown, police storm locations tied to Frank, leading to a bloody shootout that involves his family and closest associates. After being apprehended, Frank faces the consequences of his actions and ultimately agrees to testify against corrupt members of the NYPD, including some who are pivotal to his own operation. Despite the fallout, Keith Roberts, now a prosecutor, takes the lead against Frank’s operation, resulting in numerous arrests and indictments within the drug enforcement community.

By 1977, Frank and his family are placed into witness protection, their lives concealed from the public. Over the following years, Frank’s sentence is reduced, but in 1984, he finds himself back in trouble with the law, further complicating his narrative. In a significant twist, he’s defended by none other than Richie Roberts, now transitioned into a defense attorney, ultimately serving seven years in prison. The film concludes in 1991, with Frank emerging older and altered, embodying the consequences of a life led in the shadows, and in a final, chilling moment, he takes a gun and points it at the camera, leaving audiences questioning his next move.
