It was a warm summer evening in 1957, in the serene desert town of Mojave, California. Local astronomer Ted Lewis is busy preparing a special anniversary dinner for his wife, Lana. Meanwhile, a waitress named Tammy is in her trailer, engrossed in painting a horse scene, while young lovers Dick and Penny indulge in their romance at lovers lane. Everyone in town is excitedly watching the spectacular display of the annual August Perseid meteor showers when an unexpected blinding flash and a loud crash disrupt their evening, landing just outside the town.
Determined to investigate, Ted is torn away from his culinary efforts by his wife, but after she falls asleep, he sneaks out to the site of the crash. As he arrives, an alarming sight greets him—not a smoking meteorite, but a flying saucer embedded in the hillside. Cautiously, he ventures inside, only to be seized by an enigmatic alien clad in a shimmering metallic suit named Urp. As confusion takes over, the townspeople begin to mysteriously vanish, leaving behind nothing but puddles of eerie, gurgling mud.
Urp explains to Ted, now under his influence, that he is a galactic Federal Marshal on the hunt for a monstrous alien known as the Ghota, which escaped during the crash. This threat poses a dire risk to Earth as the Ghota, if left unchecked, will divide and proliferate, leading to catastrophic consequences for all life. While Urp tries to enlist Lana’s help, she is unconvinced, prompting him to seek assistance from Tammy, who he encounters on her route home.
After an unsettling experience at a decrepit cabin where they find more than just remnants of the past, Tammy grows skeptical and parts ways with Urp. Meanwhile, Dick and Penny have their own harrowing encounter with the Ghota, struggling to convince anyone of its existence before finally sharing their chilling tale with Tammy at the diner.
Despite their warnings, the local police chief dismisses their claims, only to face a grim reality when his deputy, played by Robert Patrick, becomes the monster’s next victim. With the Ghota roaming freely and attacking townsfolk, including children, the atmosphere grows desperate. Tammy narrowly escapes during a closing shift at the diner and later finds herself in a packed movie theater, where the Ghota reappears amidst a screening of the classic film The Blob, causing chaos and panic among the audience.
As the situation escalates to a critical point, Tammy arrives to rescue the captured teens, only to be ensnared herself. Just at that moment, Urp intervenes with his advanced weaponry, incapacitating the Ghota but leaving it in a state of stasis. With urgency, he and Tammy must transport the immobilized creature back to his ship to prevent it from reviving—and thus begins a thrilling chase with Sheriff Dawson and a furious mob seeking revenge.
In a tense showdown at the alien spacecraft, Tammy stands tall, intervening as the voice of reason. With a heartfelt appeal, she persuades Dawson to lower his weapon and allow Urp to leave Earth in peace, taking the Ghota with him. The sheriff, albeit reluctantly, agrees.
The film comes to a poignant close with a heartfelt farewell between Urp and Tammy, as Ted is returned to Lana, who is overjoyed to see him safe. As the townsfolk look on in disbelief, the saucer takes off, leaving behind a spectacle of smoke and wonder. In the final moments, a wistful Tammy drives away in her battered truck toward a new life, glancing back to see the saucer hover momentarily before it gives a grateful farewell and ascends into the vast cosmos—forever marking this summer night in Mojave as one etched in the annals of their small town’s history.
