Amidst the backdrop of 1943, as Allied bombs rain down on Berlin, Lilly Wust (portrayed by Maria Schrader) is left to raise her four children alone while her husband Gunther (played by Detlev Buck) is away serving in the military. In an effort to cope with the lack of affection, Lilly finds herself in a series of affairs, maintaining a facade of loyalty as she proudly displays a bust of Hitler in her home. However, her world takes a surprising turn when she receives a love letter from an admirer who signs off as Jaguar. Initially believing it to be from a man, she is deeply intrigued to discover that the author is none other than Felice Schragenheim (also played by Maria Schrader), a local journalist.

This sparks an undeniable connection between the two women, leading Lilly to realize a passion that had eluded her for so long. As she falls deeply in love with Felice, Lilly makes the drastic decision to divorce her husband, igniting a maelstrom of controversy given the societal implications of their relationship—Lilly’s affair with Felice not only defies the norms of the time but also comes with the perilous reality that Felice is Jewish and actively opposes the Nazi regime. The two women forge a love pact, determined to remain together despite the horrific anti-Jewish persecution surrounding them, yet they are acutely aware that their time is limited as the shadow of the Nazi movement looms closer.

This poignant narrative delves into themes of love and courage amidst adversity, inviting audiences to witness an extraordinary bond between two women during one of history’s darkest periods.

In this film, Juliane Köhler plays a pivotal role, eventually portraying Clara, the wife of Fritz Shimon Haber in Haber (2008).
