Outside of Cairo, a bold criminal mastermind known as Okra hijacks a convoy carrying $3 million in gold bullion, setting the stage for a daring plan to smuggle two tons into Europe. The risky mission lands in the hands of Aldo Vanucci, a legendary master of disguise nicknamed The Fox. He sits in prison, reluctant to take on the job because he fears bringing shame on his family, especially his mother and his sister Gina Vanucci. When his three sidekicks quietly hint that Gina doesn’t always come home after school, Vanucci becomes fiercely protective and makes a snap decision to escape.
Disguising himself as the prison doctor, Vanucci breaks out and heads to Rome with his loyal gang. There, his mother reveals that Gina is not the way he imagines — she’s not a street prostitute, but an actress working on a low-budget film that shoots along the glamorous Via Veneto. This misunderstanding fuels his resolve: smuggling the gold could transform his family’s life. He rekindles the deal with Okra and agrees to carry the treasure into Italy, asking for half the cut.
A lightbulb moment follows: movie stars are idolized and seem to roam free in society. Vanucci hatches a cinematic ruse, posing as Italian neo-realist director Federico Fabrizi to bring the gold ashore as a scene in a film. To give the project real clout, he persuades the vanity-obsessed American matinee idol Tony Powell to star in the phony production, which is cheekily titled The Gold of Cairo. Powell’s ambitious agent Harry is cautious, but the star’s ego wins out. Gina is cast in the film, and the entire tiny fishing village of Sevalio is roped into unloading the precious cargo. When delays threaten the schedule, Fabrizi must improvise filming sequences to keep the illusion alive.
The ship finally reaches shore, and the villagers eagerly unload the gold, but Okra betrays Vanucci and makes off with the loot. A chaotic, slapstick car chase erupts as Okra, Vanucci, and the pursuing police collide in a tangled mess. The ensemble—Vanucci, Tony, Gina, Okra, and the villagers—find themselves charged with contraband smuggling. The entire episode becomes courtroom theater, with Vanucci’s own film footage shown as evidence; a film critic declares the fragmented clips a work of art. In a decisive confession, Vanucci admits guilt and clears the locals, yet he vows another escape. He slips away again by impersonating the prison doctor, but when he tries to remove his fake beard, he discovers that the beard is real and exclaims, The wrong man has escaped!
