Jimmy, also known as JD, is preparing to move from Santa Monica to Florida because his stepfather Allen got a new job as vice-principal of his former school. The move signifies a change in environment and new beginnings for JD, his mother Katie, and Allen. Bobo, JD's father, is being released from prison around the same time, adding to the changing circumstances.

JD's father Bobo is released from prison and is greeted by members of his motorcycle gang, who have a humorous, almost goofy demeanor rather than an intimidating presence. This reunion sets the stage for Bobo's involvement in the unfolding events in Florida. The gang's quirky nature contrasts with typical criminal stereotypes.

JD is placed in a classroom led by Mrs. Goble, a strict yet caring teacher with ties to Allen's past. He attempts to make friends with Jamal, nicknamed 'Preacher,' but quickly realizes that Jamal is a nerd and very religious, which alienates him from the other students who dislike Jamal. JD's attitude makes him a troublemaker among his peers.

Bobo and his gang visit JD's old school to find out where JD is moving, prompted by Bobo's curiosity and concern. The frightened school secretary is forced to let them browse through files, revealing Bobo's attempt to reconnect or locate JD amid his criminal past. This scene introduces tension about family and secrets.

JD shows off his gang tattoo and dismisses the other boys as hicks, distancing himself with his rebellious attitude. Allen, trying to appear 'cool,' also struggles to relate, often appearing clumsy and awkward, which further alienates JD from his stepfather. The gang arrives in Florida while the kids are in the woods, marking the beginning of their troublemaking. They intimidate an old man running a bar, claiming it's closed, but in reality, they are welcomed inside for free. Their presence hints at impending chaos in the town.
