Amy, a recent graduate with a passion for poetry, finds herself at a crossroads between her artistic dreams and the realities of adult life. Her parents, concerned about her future, encourage her to take a job at Adult World, a quirky sex shop overseen by the enigmatic Alex. As Amy embarks on this new journey, she faces harsh truths about growing up, including the theft of her car and her parents’ disappointment when they discover she values her art over financial stability.
In search of comfort, Amy moves in with Rubia, a trans woman and her coworker at Adult World. Here, she has the opportunity to meet her literary hero, Rat Billings, who becomes her trusted mentor and confidant. As their bond deepens, Amy struggles to balance her admiration for Billings’ work and her aspirations to earn recognition as a writer in her own right.
When Amy is eventually fired from Adult World for failing to catch a shoplifter, her feelings of humiliation intensify, and she directs her frustration towards Alex. Realizing the harm of her actions, she later seeks forgiveness, which marks the beginning of a romantic relationship that helps her grow.
Despite these developments, Amy’s journey is rife with self-doubt. A significant setback occurs when her work is included in an anthology curated by Billings, leading to feelings of embarrassment. Overwhelmed with despair, she contemplates ending her life but ultimately discovers the resilience to see a different path ahead.
Following this pivotal moment, Amy stands at a significant junction, reevaluating her life choices and artistic goals. With encouragement from Alex, she begins submitting her writing to an erotica magazine as a playful experiment, which surprisingly garners positive feedback. In this new phase, she starts to find her authentic voice and identity.
The film culminates with Amy immersing herself in Billings’ anthology, Shit Poems: An Anthology of Bad Verse, leading her to a profound awakening in self-acceptance and realization. In the epilogue, we’re delighted to learn that Amy has blossomed into a celebrated poet, proudly showcasing her debut book in a bookstore, signifying her hard-earned journey and triumph over adversity.
