What Happens in Ace of Hearts: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of Ace of Hearts (2008) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

The film centers around a courageous K-9 dog named Ace. The local police force is on a mission to apprehend a burglar they've dubbed "Goliath." During an operation, Ace and his human partner, Daniel Harding, track down the thief, a man named Torko portrayed by Mike Dopud. In an intense chase through the woods, Ace manages to subdue Torko, but this occurs away from Dan’s sight. By the time Dan reaches the scene, the police discover injuries on Torko's neck, leading them to mistakenly believe that Ace has bitten him. Unfortunately, the evidence against Torko is insufficient for criminal charges, resulting in officials deeming Ace dangerous and ordering him to be euthanized.

In desperation, Dan takes Ace to a veterinary hospital in Spokane, where he has to leave his faithful companion for what he believes will be the end. Heartbroken, he later returns to the scene of Torko's capture, only to realize the area is under constant video surveillance. As Dan investigates, he finds a piece of barbed wire, which he suspects Torko used to inflict the injuries upon himself. Despite his attempts to convince his superior to halt the euthanasia, he is met with resistance. The surveillance footage is not yet available as technicians are still "cleaning it up."

Meanwhile, unbeknownst to Dan, Ace has cleverly escaped the veterinary hospital and is making his way back home. The technician’s attempt to cover up his mistake—by providing a container of ashes marked as Ace’s—is not the only intriguing twist. Together, Dan and his daughter, Julia Harding, who is eager to see Ace, are unaware that he has been celebrated as a hero for capturing a petty thief in the meantime. When Julia spots Ace on a television news segment, she seeks to convince her father that it's indeed their beloved dog, despite the delivery of what they think are Ace’s remains.

Julia eventually persuades Dan to journey to Wenatchee in search of Ace. The situation intensifies when, during their return, Julia believes she sees Ace, who playfully waves at her—a trick he learned from her. However, Dan, caught up in his grief, dismisses her sighting as a dream. The story takes a pivotal turn when Dan's captain brings him in to review the surveillance footage, which reveals Torko first using the barbed wire to fend off Ace, only to harm himself afterwards. This proves that Dan was right all along, igniting his frustration with his captain.

Meanwhile, Julia decides to investigate Torko's home, convinced he is the one responsible for framing Ace. In her attempt to gather proof, she unintentionally breaks in and discovers damaging evidence. Upon returning home, she inadvertently attracts Torko’s attention, who soon comes looking for her. As the suspense builds, Torko confronts Julia and her mother, but Ace arrives just in time, tackling Torko in a dramatic rescue. However, Torko retaliates by stabbing Ace with a shard of broken glass.

The climax leads to the police capturing Torko upon Dan's arrival, while Ace requires medical attention but ultimately recovers. In the end, Dan allows Julia to take Ace to the K-9 competition, where Ace triumphantly wins first place. The film concludes with Julia enjoying time with Ace in their backyard, while Dan makes plans to finally take his wife, Lily Harding, on their long-awaited honeymoon to Tahiti, as the credits roll.

Ace of Hearts Plot Explained: Your Questions Answered

The questions people ask most about Ace of Hearts (2008): what happens in the confusing scenes, why the characters do what they do, the twists, hidden details and what the ending means. Each answer contains spoilers.

Q1

Why was Ace ordered to be euthanized?

Police found injuries on suspect Torko's neck and assumed Ace had bitten him during the chase. Because the evidence against Torko was too weak to hold him, officials instead classified Ace as a dangerous 'biter' and demanded he be put down.

Foreshadowing: The fact that Ace subdued Torko out of Dan's sight, shown early on, is what allows the false accusation to take hold.

  • ace euthanized
  • ace mauling accusation
  • ace dangerous biter
  • ace of hearts dog put down
Q2

How did Dan prove Ace didn't bite the suspect?

Dan returned to the crime scene and discovered it was covered by 24-hour video surveillance. After days of waiting for the footage to be cleaned up, the tape showed Torko using barbed wire to fend off Ace and then accidentally injuring himself, proving Ace never bit him.

Foreshadowing: Dan finding the piece of barbed wire at the scene earlier hinted at exactly how Torko caused his own wounds.

  • surveillance footage
  • prove ace innocent
  • barbed wire evidence
  • torko self inflicted
Q3

How did Ace escape from the veterinary hospital?

The film shows Ace cleverly slipping out of the veterinary hospital in Spokane on his own, determined to get back to Dan. His escape went unnoticed until a technician attempted to cover up the failure by handing Dan a container of ashes falsely labeled as Ace's remains.

Foreshadowing: Ace's intelligence and training as a K-9 are hinted at throughout the chase, making his breakout plausible before it happens.

  • ace escape vet
  • ace escape spokane
  • fake ashes ace
  • vet technician cover up
Q4

What evidence did Julia find at Torko's house?

Julia broke into Torko's home while trying to gather proof that he had framed Ace. Inside, she uncovered damaging evidence that connected him to the burglary and the staged attack on himself, giving the family the ammunition they needed.

Foreshadowing: Julia's earlier insistence that Torko was responsible foreshadows her decision to investigate him on her own.

  • julia break in
  • torko house evidence
  • julia investigation
  • ace frame job
Q5

How did Ace become a television hero?

After escaping the veterinary hospital, Ace independently captured a petty thief, and the arrest was covered by local news. The segment aired under the assumption the dog was a stray hero, which is how Julia spotted him on TV and convinced Dan he was their Ace.

Foreshadowing: Ace's earlier training and drive to return to Dan set up the idea that he would keep working as a K-9 even on his own.

  • ace news segment
  • ace captures thief
  • julia sees ace on tv
  • stray hero dog
Q6

Why couldn't Torko be charged with burglary despite the chase?

Even though Ace cornered Torko in the woods, there was no physical evidence or witnesses strong enough to hold up in court. With no case against Torko, officials shifted their focus to punishing Ace for the supposed bite, treating the dog as the offender instead.

Foreshadowing: The chase happening out of Dan's sight is what leaves the arrest without solid backing.

  • torko not charged
  • insufficient evidence burglary
  • ace of hearts arrest
  • k9 case dropped
Q7

Why did the vet technician give Dan a container of ashes?

The technician tried to hide the fact that Ace had escaped before the euthanasia could be carried out. To avoid being blamed for losing a high-profile K-9, he handed Dan a container of ashes labeled as Ace's remains, pretending the procedure had already been done.

Foreshadowing: The technician's rushed behavior at the hospital hints that something has gone wrong before the ashes are revealed.

  • fake ashes ace
  • vet technician lie
  • ace remains cremation
  • cover up escape
Q8

Who is Goliath in the story?

Goliath is the nickname the local police give to a burglar named Torko, the man they are hunting when Ace is sent into the woods. The moniker is used throughout the investigation and is the reason the K-9 unit is mobilized in the first place.

  • goliath burglar
  • torko nickname
  • ace of hearts suspect
  • k9 chase woods
Q9

How did Torko end up at Julia's house?

After Julia broke into his home looking for evidence, she unintentionally tipped Torko off when she returned. Realizing someone had searched his property, Torko followed her back and confronted Julia and her mother at their house, which is where Ace arrives to protect them.

Foreshadowing: Julia's decision to investigate alone is set up as risky long before Torko shows up at the door.

  • torko follows julia
  • confrontation julia house
  • torko revenge
  • ace rescue scene
Q10

What trick helped Julia recognize Ace on the road?

Julia had taught Ace to wave his paw on command, and during the drive back from Wenatchee she saw a dog in a towed car perform the same wave. Convinced it was Ace, she tried to tell Dan, who dismissed it as a dream, only for the truth to come out later.

Foreshadowing: Small moments of Julia training Ace earlier in the film pay off during this roadside sighting.

  • ace wave trick
  • julia sees ace
  • wenatchee road trip
  • ace paw wave
Q11

How was Ace injured during the rescue?

When Ace tackled Torko to save Julia and her mother, Torko fought back by stabbing Ace with a shard of broken glass. The wound was serious enough to require veterinary care, but Ace ultimately made a full recovery.

Foreshadowing: Torko's escalating aggression after being caught on the surveillance footage signals that a violent clash is inevitable.

  • ace stabbed glass
  • torko stabs ace
  • ace injured rescue
  • broken glass attack
Q12

Why was Dan angry with his captain after the surveillance footage?

Once the cleaned-up tape proved Ace had never bitten Torko, Dan's frustration boiled over because his captain had ignored his repeated pleas to delay the euthanasia order. Watching the evidence vindicate him while his partner had nearly been killed made him feel his concerns had been brushed aside.

Foreshadowing: The captain's earlier refusals to halt the order are what fuel Dan's reaction when the footage finally clears Ace.

  • dan captain argument
  • captain ignored dan
  • surveillance clears ace
  • police captain frustration
Q13

What happens at the K-9 competition at the end?

After Ace recovers from his injuries, Dan lets Julia take him to a K-9 competition. Despite everything he has been through, Ace performs well enough to win first place, giving the family a triumphant moment to close out the film.

Foreshadowing: Ace's media recognition as a hero earlier in the story builds toward this public victory.

  • k9 competition
  • ace wins first place
  • julia ace competition
  • ace of hearts ending
Q14

Why does Dan finally plan his honeymoon to Tahiti?

With Ace cleared, Torko arrested, and the family crisis resolved, Dan can finally turn his attention back to his marriage and book the long-delayed honeymoon he and his wife Lily had been postponing. The Tahiti trip signals that the family has moved past the threat of losing Ace.
