Karthik, Prashanth is on his way from Chennai to attend his friend Anand's wedding in a village. At the bus stand, he spots a girl and is instantly drawn to her; later, he unexpectedly meets the same girl in the village again. To express his feelings, he writes a heartfelt love letter and has it delivered through a small girl. When the letter reaches the recipient, Karthik is shocked to discover that the girl is Lakshmi Kausalya, who is also Anand's fiancée.
Lakshmi's relatives react furiously to the appearance of the mysterious letter-writer, and they begin a frantic search to identify the person behind it. After the wedding takes place, Karthik bravely admits that it was he who sent the letter, apologizing for not realizing that Lakshmi was the bride. The relatives ultimately forgive him, and Lakshmi and Anand leave for Chennai together. Still, trouble brews beneath the surface. Anand grows suspicious that Lakshmi might have been involved with Karthik, and he starts to monitor her closely, especially when he is alone at home. The tension deepens as Anand openly expresses his distrust and accuses Lakshmi of having an improper relationship with Karthik. Lakshmi is left to navigate a marriage that feels increasingly unstable.
Meanwhile, Chandini, Karthik's college mate, has fallen for him, though Karthik does not initially return her feelings. Chandini continues to pursue him, and eventually he softens enough to consider a relationship. Her father, a wealthy local figure, decides that they should marry, setting up another potential life change for Karthik. Yet the cloud over Lakshmi's marriage grows darker as Anand's cruelty escalates. He subjects Lakshmi to harsh treatment and even a brutal act of violence, going so far as to throw acid on her face.
A visitor—Lakshmi's cousin—arrives and witnesses the abuse. Lakshmi pleads with her cousin not to alarm her father, fearing the worry and shame it would bring. In a moment of desperate fear, Lakshmi contemplates suicide by jumping from a nearby bridge, but Karthik arrives just in time to pull her back to safety. Realizing how deeply his actions have contributed to the turmoil, Karthik feels a heavy responsibility for the chaos that has followed.
Determined to clear the air, Karthik goes to confront Anand, insisting that he does not have an affair with Lakshmi. Anand dismisses him again, and he schemes to sever Karthik’s budding relationship with Chandini as well. He manipulates Chandini by telling her stories that cast doubt on Karthik, and Chandini’s father responds with anger, sending goons to confront Karthik. The fight ends with Karthik triumphing over the assailants, but the victory highlights the fractures in all the relationships involved.
Feeling betrayed by Chandini, who believed the rumors rather than Karthik, he decides to end things with her. Meanwhile, Lakshmi, overwhelmed by the ongoing abuse, resolves to leave Anand. Karthik accompanies her as they travel toward her village, seeking a chance to start anew away from the mounting pressure. But Anand informs Lakshmi's father that Lakshmi intends to elope with Karthik, further straining trust within Lakshmi’s family.
Anand and his father arrive in the village with the aim of tarnishing Lakshmi's reputation in front of their community. Lakshmi’s cousin steps forward to clarify the truth, and gradually Lakshmi's father recognizes his mistake and offers a heartfelt apology. In a final act of defiance, Lakshmi rejects Anand by throwing the “thali” at his face, signaling the end of their marriage. She determines she should not stay with parents who doubted her, and she begins to walk away from the village, with Karthik standing by her side as a loyal friend. The film closes with them leaving the village together, choosing to face the world side by side as friends who have come through hardship and emerged with a renewed sense of trust and resilience.
