Matt initially refuses because he suspects Kenny Kristo is involved in drug trafficking and doesn't want to work for criminals. Reuben is one of Kenny Kristo's associates who had a troubling connection to Leila Anderssen, he was the last person to see her before she disappeared. Matt was formerly an NYPD detective but left the force, likely due to the traumatic events shown in the opening scene where he violently killed two robbers.
