John George Haigh is raised in a Yorkshire village within a strict Plymouth Brethren household. His father teaches that their family are among 'God's elect' and separate from others. This insular start seeds a belief in his own exceptionalism that foreshadows later criminal fantasies.

Haigh marries Beatrice 'Betty' Hamer, who becomes pregnant with his child. The couple's early life is shadowed by his growing fraud convictions as he serves a prison sentence. Betty's pregnancy adds personal tension as his criminal life begins to take root.

While serving his prison sentence, Haigh reads about corpus delicti and wrongly believes murder cannot be proven without a body. This misconception fuels a recurring dream of the perfect murder, leading him to test ideas by dissolving mice in sulphuric acid. The experiments plant the blueprint for his later crimes.

Betty gives birth to Haigh's daughter and moves away, severing closer ties. Upon release, Haigh travels to London and begins seeking new work and schemes. The change of location marks the shift from small-time crime to elaborate deception.

Haigh is fired from his engineering job after starting a relationship with his boss's daughter, Gillian Rogers. He pivots toward presenting himself as an inventor, planting seeds for future schemes. This period blends personal risk with professional instability.

Haigh befriends former employer Donald McSwan and his elderly parents, William and Amy, and offers to help manage the business while Donald fights in World War II. He uses the pretense of aid to consolidate influence over the McSwan affairs. The family trusts him as wartime pressures mount.

Haigh lures Donald to his workshop, bludgeons him to death, and dissolves the body in a vat of acid. He forgues Donald’s signature to take control of Donald’s affairs and maintains the illusion that Donald is on the run. The crime marks his first major murder-for-gain in a series.

As VE Day approaches, Haigh tells William and Amy that Donald has returned to London and is waiting at his workshop. He then drives them there and murders them, using the same acid method to erase their presence. The murders provide Haigh with more funds and a ready-made cover for his new life.

With the McSwan fortune, Haigh establishes himself at the Onslow Court Hotel in Kensington, presenting himself as a well-off property figure. He uses the security of wealth to lure new victims and expand his criminal operation. The hotel becomes a hub for his later schemes.

Haigh befriends Archie Henderson, a doctor, and invites him to his workshop where he kills him. The murder showcases his method of using trust and proximity to eliminate targets. He then turns his attention to Henderson's wife under false pretenses.

Haigh lures Rose Henderson to the workshop, claiming her husband is ill, and kills her there. The case deepens his deceit and increases scrutiny of his dealings with the Henderson estate.

Rose's brother Arnold Burton becomes suspicious when Haigh is linked to the Hendersons' supposed relocation and the signatures he forged. He reports his concerns to the police, helping spark an official investigation into disappearances connected to Haigh. This marks the shift from private killings to public scrutiny.

Olive Durand-Deacon, a fellow Onslow Court resident, disappears after Haigh's funds start to run low. Her friend Constance Lane grows concerned and pressures Haigh to accompany her to the police. Haigh then dissolves Olive in acid to cover his tracks.

Detectives close in as Haigh confesses to killing Olive and claims five other murders, with three more possible. A Home Office pathologist examines the workshop and recovers gallstones and a pelvic bone, providing physical evidence of the murders. Haigh’s confidence begins to crumble as the case builds toward conviction.

Haigh is convicted of murder and awaits a death sentence. He is visited by Gillian Rogers, who Haigh asks to visit his parents after his hanging. The film ends with Gillian honoring that promise, closing the cycle of Haigh’s manipulation and deceit.
