Nip Siu-sin's remains are buried at the foot of the tree where the Tree Demoness resides. As long as her cremated remains rest there, her spirit remains enslaved to the demoness. This is why she cannot leave the temple area and why breaking this bond is essential to freeing her.

The Tree Demoness is first mentioned when Nip reveals her tragic circumstances, explaining the supernatural束缚 that binds her.

When sunlight falls on the urn containing Nip's cremated remains, Ning quickly shields it with a curtain. This act prevents the sunlight from destroying her soul, which would have happened if the rays had directly hit the urn.

The danger of sunlight to ghosts was established earlier when the Taoist priest warned about supernatural entities.

Ning refuses to give up after Nip's soul is banished to the Underworld and insists that Yin help him. Although reluctant, Yin agrees because of Ning's determination and opens a temporary portal so they can enter the Underworld together to search for Nip.

Yin's initial refusal creates tension, but Ning's persistence ultimately convinces him to take the risk.

Nip tells Ning that the only way to save her soul is to rebury her remains at a more auspicious burial site. Following Yin's advice, Ning chooses a hillcrest location, believed to be风水-auspicious in Chinese tradition, and lights a joss stick while praying. This ritual properly transfers her soul to a peaceful rest.

Yin Chik-ha confronts the Tree Demoness in battle and attempts to free Nip's tethered soul, but the demoness overpowers him. Despite his skills as a demon-hunter, the Tree Demoness is too powerful, and Nip remains trapped. As punishment for betraying her master, Nip's soul is then banished to the Underworld.

The Tree Demoness was established as a formidable antagonist who controls spirits in her domain.

The rainbow appearing at the end symbolizes hope and redemption. Though Nip and Ning are separated, with her soul saved but remaining in the afterlife, they both find peace. The rainbow represents the positive outcome of their journey and hints at possible future reunions.

The bittersweet ending balances tragedy (their separation) with hope (her soul's salvation), making the rainbow a natural symbol of that balance.

After a Taoist priest warns him that the figures in the temple might be ghosts, Ning returns to the temple the next night to investigate. He confirms that Nip Siu-sin is indeed a ghost when he sees her supernatural nature firsthand, setting him on his path to save her.

The priest's warning plants doubt in Ning's mind, prompting him to return and discover the truth.

Ning meets Nip Siu-sin at night in the deserted temple and is immediately captivated by her beauty and charm. Despite learning she is a ghost, his love does not waver, he embarks on a dangerous quest to free her soul, demonstrating the depth of his affection.

The instant attraction is immediate and intense, setting up the central romance of the film.

The Underworld is filled with countless spirits, making the search extremely difficult. Ning and Yin persist through the realm of the dead and finally catch a brief glimpse of Nip near dawn. They manage to return to the world above before it's too late.

The difficulty of finding one soul in the Underworld was foreshadowed by the chaotic, crowded nature of the realm.

Although Yin is initially reluctant, possibly because the task is dangerous and nearly impossible, he agrees after Ning refuses to give up. Ning's determination and refusal to abandon Nip convince Yin to take the risk and open the portal to the Underworld.

Yin's reluctance shows his experience with supernatural matters, but his eventual agreement reveals his compassionate side.
