What Happens at the End of 7 Prisoners?

How 7 Prisoners (2021) ends, what the final scene means, which earlier moments set it up and how to read the ending if the film leaves it open. The full ending explained, with every spoiler.

The ending of 7 Prisoners reveals how Mateus, who started as a vulnerable young man desperate to support his family, gradually becomes entangled in the corrupt world of human trafficking. Initially hopeful about achieving a better life, he first tried to negotiate with Luca, the exploiter, convincing him to release them after their debts were paid. As time passed, Luca's favoritism and the promise of financial gain gradually corrupted Mateus, leading him to accept a position of power within the illegal network. His moral struggle intensifies as he witnesses the brutal realities of trafficking, including selling women and exploiting fellow prisoners.

When Luca is called away to participate in a political campaign run by his boss, Bianchi, the contrast between the corrupt system and the aim for a seemingly brighter future becomes clear. Luca offers Mateus the chance to leave with him, further pulling him into this world of greed. However, Mateus's loyalty is tested when his closest friend Samuel attempts to escape. In a moment driven by fear and the desire for future success, Mateus chooses to turn Samuel in, calling police and sending a threatening image to his friend's family. This act signifies Mateus's complete moral decline, having betrayed his friendship and conscience for personal gain.

The final scenes show Mateus sitting in a car, with a burn mark on his arm symbolizing how much he has changed — from a hopeful young man to someone who is hardened and fully immersed in the world of greed and exploitation. His transformation underscores a tragic commentary on how relentless pursuit of wealth and escape from poverty can corrupt a person, turning them into a different individual capable of cruelty. In the end, Mateus’s journey exposes the destructive power of greed and the loss of innocence amid a corrupt system that enslaves not only the body but also the spirit.
