Jung-hoon, Yoo Seung-ho, is the top student at his school, respected for his quick thinking and calm approach under pressure. His rival, Tae-gyu, Sang-geun Jo, thrives on provocation and uses every chance to undermine him, and the two are known enemies among their peers. One afternoon, Tae-gyu pushes Jung-hoon too far and the latter brandishes a knife in a heated moment, an act witnessed by another student. Jung-hoon walks away, but as the 4th period begins he returns to a grimmer scene: Tae-gyu lies dead, stabbed repeatedly. In shock, Jung-hoon picks up the bloody knife from a nearby desk, just as Lee Da-jeong, Kang So-ra, arrives and catches him in a incriminating position.

Lee Da-jeong believes in Jung-hoon’s innocence and insists on helping him unravel what happened, recognizing that time is against them because in 40 minutes the rest of the class will return and the body will be discovered. The pair team up to search for clues and quickly realize that almost everyone in the room could be a suspect. The investigation unfolds with careful attention to motive and opportunity, while an unseen threat begins to close in on them as well, turning the high school into a tense maze where trust is scarce and danger lurks around every corner. As they dig deeper, the atmosphere grows more claustrophobic, and the stakes rise: catching the real killer becomes not only a matter of clearing Jung-hoon’s name but of staying one step ahead of a killer who has his sights set on them.

4th Period Mystery Plot Explained: Your Questions Answered

The questions people ask most about 4th Period Mystery (2009): what happens in the confusing scenes, why the characters do what they do, the twists, hidden details and what the ending means. Each answer contains spoilers.

Q1

Why does Jung-hoon pick up the bloody knife if he's innocent?

Jung-hoon picks up the knife in a state of shock after discovering Tae-gyu's body. This split-second decision proves catastrophic, as Da-jeong arrives moments later and finds him holding the bloody weapon, creating damning circumstantial evidence against him. His momentary lapse in judgment forces him into a desperate race to prove his innocence before the class returns.

Foreshadowing: Earlier, Jung-hoon brandished a knife during his confrontation with Tae-gyu, making his fingerprints on the weapon appear incriminating.

  • bloody knife

  • incriminating evidence

Q2

Why does Da-jeong believe Jung-hoon is innocent despite finding him with the knife?

Da-jeong chooses to believe Jung-hoon based on her assessment of his character and the circumstances. She recognizes that the timing is too convenient, Jung-hoon had just threatened Tae-gyu in front of witnesses, making him an obvious suspect, which actually suggests someone may be framing him. Her quick trust allows them to work together before the situation escalates.

Q3

What happens when the 40-minute deadline runs out?

The 40-minute deadline represents the time before the rest of the class returns from break and discovers Tae-gyu's body. If they haven't identified the real killer by then, Jung-hoon will be found holding the bloody knife with clear motive and opportunity, making him the prime suspect with almost no chance of proving his innocence.

Foreshadowing: The tension begins immediately when Da-jeong arrives, establishing the urgency that drives every subsequent decision.

Q4

Who are the main suspects in Tae-gyu's murder?

Since Tae-gyu was known for provoking others and had enemies throughout the school, nearly everyone in his circle becomes a potential suspect. The investigation reveals that multiple people had motive and opportunity, with alibis that don't fully account for the time of death. The killer must be someone who knew about the rivalry between Jung-hoon and Tae-gyu and used that knowledge to frame Jung-hoon.

Q5

Why does the killer start hunting Jung-hoon and Da-jeong?

The killer pursues them because they are actively investigating the murder and getting closer to discovering the truth. As they gather clues and narrow down suspects, the real killer sees them as a threat to freedom. The killer knows the school layout and uses it to his advantage, turning the corridors into a dangerous maze where anyone could be the next victim.

Q6

What crucial clue helps narrow down who the real killer is?

A pivotal clue emerges during their investigation that significantly narrows the suspect list. This clue connects directly to the method of the murder or the killer's access to the classroom at the specific time of the killing. It shifts the focus from general enemies of Tae-gyu to someone with specific knowledge or capability.

Q7

Why is the rivalry between Jung-hoon and Tae-gyu important to the murder?

The rivalry provides the perfect cover for the real killer. By framing Jung-hoon, who had just threatened Tae-gyu with a knife in front of witnesses, the murderer ensures that all suspicion falls on the obvious suspect. The intensity of their public conflict makes Jung-hoon the logical choice for investigators, while the actual killer remains hidden among the other students.

Foreshadowing: Tae-gyu's habit of pushing Jung-hoon to his limits was well-known among classmates, making the framing believable.

Q8

How do Jung-hoon and Da-jeong plan to catch the real killer?

Using the clues they've gathered throughout their investigation, they devise a plan to corner the murderer in the school courtyard. The plan relies on baiting the killer into exposing themselves by revealing they've identified the real culprit. This bold move forces the killer out of hiding, though the resolution remains tense as they must act before the class returns.

  • confrontation
  • trap
  • courtyard
  • capture

Q9

Why is investigating the murder so dangerous for Jung-hoon and Da-jeong?

Investigating the murder is dangerous because the real killer is still inside the school and is aware of their investigation. As they get closer to the truth, the killer views them as obstacles who must be eliminated. The confined school environment means there's no escape route, and anyone, including teachers or fellow students, could be the murderer hiding in plain sight.

Q10

Why is the timing of Tae-gyu's murder suspicious?

The murder occurs immediately after Jung-hoon's knife threat, making it appear as if Jung-hoon acted on his impulse in a fit of rage. This precise timing is too convenient, suggesting someone orchestrated the murder to coincide with the public confrontation. The killer clearly knew about the rivalry and used it to create the perfect opportunity for framing Jung-hoon.
