In a small desert town in California, Pinky Rose starts a new chapter of her life by securing a job at a health spa for the elderly. This position marks the beginning of her adventure and introduces her to an array of quirky individuals.

As Pinky immerses herself in her work, she becomes entranced by her co-worker Millie Lammoreaux, whose endless chatter is both captivating and overwhelming. Despite their differences, they form a deep friendship that leads them to become roommates.

The two women settle into the Purple Sage Apartments, managed by Edgar Hart, a former stunt double. Millie's boisterous conversations begin to wear on the nerves of those around her, yet Pinky stays fascinated by her perspective on life.

As their relationship deepens, tensions begin to surface between Pinky and Millie after a series of disagreements. Their contrasting personalities clash, culminating in a confrontation that leaves Millie feeling suffocated and prompts her to leave.

When Millie returns with Edgar, Pinky pleads with her to consider the implications of her behavior on Edgar’s pregnant wife, Willie. Millie, feeling threatened by Pinky’s concerns, demands that Pinky vacate their shared home.

In an act of rebellion against Millie's demands, Pinky jumps off the balcony into the pool below. This desperate move highlights her inner turmoil and desire to reclaim her independence from the suffocating relationship.

After her fall, Pinky is hospitalized and slips into a deep coma, leaving her friends and family in distress. Millie, consumed by guilt, begins to visit Pinky every day, struggling with the weight of her actions.

Pinky eventually awakens but does not recognize her own parents who come to visit her. In a fit of anger, she insists they leave, highlighting her emotional disconnection from her former life.

Back in the apartment with Millie, Pinky begins mirroring Millie's behavior, adopting habits such as drinking and smoking. This identity shift serves as an unsettling reflection of their intertwined lives as she takes on the shared name 'Mildred.'

One eerie night, plagued by a troubling dream, Pinky and Millie find comfort in each other's presence, sharing a bed. Their moment of solace is shattered when Edgar drunkenly intrudes, making unwanted advances as Willie goes into labor.

They rush to help Edgar's wife, Willie, who is alone and in excruciating pain. In a heartbreaking turn of events, Pinky’s failure to call for medical help leads to a tragedy when Willie suffers a stillbirth, altering their lives forever.

Following the stillbirth, Pinky reverts to a childlike state, now calling Millie 'Mother' and becoming submissive. Meanwhile, Millie mimics Willie’s mannerisms, blurring the lines of their individuality and deepening their disturbing bond.

As life resumes at Dodge City, a delivery vendor reveals Edgar's untimely demise to Millie, who responds insincerely. This interaction exposes the theme of complicity and the emotional disconnect that has developed among the characters.
