In April 2003, avid mountaineer Aron Ralston ventures out for a solo hike in Canyonlands National Park, Utah. Excited for the adventure, he neglects to inform anyone about his hiking plans, setting the stage for unforeseen challenges ahead.

During his hike, Aron encounters two lost hikers, Kristi and Megan. He lends them a helping hand by providing directions, and they bond while exploring an underground pool, creating memorable experiences together.

While enjoying their time, Kristi and Megan invite Aron to a party taking place the next night. Despite the tempting offer, Aron chooses to decline the invitation and continue his solo adventure.

As Aron traverses the narrow confines of Bluejohn Canyon, disaster strikes when an 800-pound boulder shifts unexpectedly. This brutal incident leaves his right arm trapped against the canyon wall, plunging him into a dire situation.

Realizing his isolation and desperate circumstances, Aron begins to record a video diary on his camcorder. This act serves not only as a moral booster but also as a way to document his struggle against the odds.

In a harrowing turn of events, Aron's only tool, a pocket knife, slips from his grasp while he tries to chip away at the boulder. With no other options, he is forced to use his bare feet and a small branch to retrieve the knife, showcasing his desperation.

Over the next five days, Aron meticulously rations the scant food and water he has left. As he battles extreme isolation and cold temperatures, he sadly resorts to drinking his own urine to survive.

As time passes, the weight of isolation overwhelms Aron, leading him to despair and vivid hallucinations. He begins to visualize memories of his past, including visions of his family and his former girlfriend, Rana, intensifying his sense of loneliness.

On the sixth day, a mysterious vision of his future son ignites a fierce will to survive within Aron. This pivotal moment drives him to push through the torment and take action to escape his dire circumstances.

Drawing on his resourcefulness, Aron creates a tourniquet using CamelBak tube insulation. This clever improvisation allows him to stabilize his arm and prepare for the gruesome act of amputation that lies ahead.

In a grim but necessary act for survival, Aron uses a multi-tool to meticulously amputate his trapped arm. With steely determination, he employs torque principles to break his arm bones before proceeding with the surgery.

After finally freeing himself, Aron secures the stump to prevent exsanguination. This critical step showcases his determination to survive despite the overwhelming pain and trauma he has endured.

After capturing a poignant snapshot of the boulder, Aron demonstrates incredible skill by rappelling down a 65 ft rock face. This feat is not only a testament to his climbing abilities but also a crucial moment in his escape.

During his descent, Aron spots a hiking family in the distance and desperately calls for their assistance. This chance encounter proves to be a turning point, leading to his rescue and restoring hope after days of torment.

The hiking family helps Aron by providing him with water and notifies the authorities of his situation. He is subsequently rescued by a Utah Highway Patrol helicopter and taken to a hospital for treatment, marking the end of his harrowing ordeal.
