Xiaoma, newly arrived in Beijing, rents a room in a traditional courtyard owned by an elderly landlady, Grandma. Their relationship starts tensely—Grandma demands a share of courtyard‑cleaning profits, refuses to let Xiaoma install a telephone, and intrusively probes her love life. Over four seasons the women exchange perspectives: Grandma imparts the customs the modern city has left behind, while Xiaoma brings youthful energy. Their rivalry softens into a deep, lasting friendship.
