Ezra, Sohrab Modi, is a skilled jeweller who shares his life with his young son Elijah and a loyal, friendly butler/childminder named Emmanuel. As Ezra prepares to depart on a trip, Elijah grows upset and clings to the balcony, where a stone slips from his hand and strikes Brutus, the Governor of Rome, on the head. Brutus promptly has Elijah arrested, and, since Elijah is Jewish, sentences him to death. Ezra rushes back, pleading with Brutus to spare his son, but Brutus orders Elijah to be fed to hungry lions. Grief-stricken, Ezra returns home to mourn, while Emmanuel watches his master slip into a near-catatonic state.

In a brutal stroke of vengeance, Emmanuel abducts Lydia, Brutus’s motherless daughter, and brings her to Ezra. The sight of the girl calling him father jolts Ezra awake, and he refuses to harm her, choosing to raise her as his own child. Brutus’s fury grows, and he orders the guards to find his daughter and to punish all Jews. Emmanuel helps Lydia escape the guards, who break down Ezra’s front door; in a gruesome tale that Emmanuel tells of murdering Lydia and feeding her to stray dogs, the guards kill him. Ezra hides and raises Lydia, who grows up believing she is Ezra’s daughter and that her name is Hannah.

Fifteen years pass, and Ezra becomes a renowned jeweller, known among his community as a man deeply dedicated to his craft and his faith. Hannah [Meena Kumari] grows into a beautiful young woman who attracts interest from many suitors. The Emperor of Rome arrives in Rome for the marriage of his son Prince Marcus [Dilip Kumar] to Brutus’s niece Princess Octavia [Nigar Sultana].

Prince Marcus, however, resists the marriage and avoids the public attention it demands. After a hunting trip, he is injured and is cared for by Hannah. He then disguises himself as a Jew and returns to the Jewish quarter, where he saves Hannah from the advances of a Roman soldier and meets her father, Ezra, not as Marcus but as Moshe, a successful Jew from Alexandria. Ezra welcomes him, and the two form a bond, with Hannah and Moshe falling in love. The young woman soon suspects there’s more to Moshe than meets the eye, and Marcus eventually reveals his true identity, devastating Hannah with his deception. She banishes him from her life.

The wedding of Marcus and Octavia proceeds, but Hannah suddenly confronts the guests, claiming to have been betrayed by a Roman. Ezra joins in the accusation, demanding justice. The Emperor presses for the culprit’s name, and Hannah accuses Prince Marcus. Brutus attempts to refute the claim, but the Emperor insists on a fair verdict. Brokenhearted, Hannah withdraws to her home. Princess Octavia follows her, pleading entry, but Hannah refuses. Octavia warns that the prince will be executed the next day if the truth does not emerge.

Early the following morning, Hannah brings Ezra to the Emperor and retracts her accusation, insisting that the man who cheated was not the prince but a look‑alike. Ezra is stunned, and Brutus, delighted by the reversal, sentences Hannah and Ezra to death in a public boiling oil trial, to take place before the Prince. Marcus, unable to bear the sight of his beloved facing death, blinds himself and follows them to the boiling chamber.

Ezra pleads for Hannah’s life, while she urges him to live without hate. Brutus remains relentless, insisting they must die. In a dramatic turn, Ezra tells Brutus that he knows where Brutus’s long‑lost daughter is, a revelation that confuses the governor and fuels his fury. Ezra agrees to reveal the daughter’s location only if Hannah is executed; he then reveals to Brutus and Hannah that Hannah is Brutus’s own daughter. The guards are ordered to throw Hannah into the cauldron, but Brutus halts the execution at the last moment. Ezra gazes at Hannah and dies.

Grief‑stricken, Hannah cradles Ezra’s lifeless body and, despite Brutus’s insistence to move on, refuses to yield to hatred. She flees with the blinded Marcus, and the two disappear into the distance, leaving a trail of shattered loyalties and a legacy shaped by love, betrayal, and the enduring hope of reconciliation.
