Winter in Wartime

The story begins with an RAF de Havilland Mosquito aircraft being shot down during World War II. A young British pilot, Jack, manages to parachute to safety, marking the start of Michiel's involvement in the resistance.

A local villager named Dirk assists Jack after he lands but is soon captured by the Germans. Before being arrested, Dirk gives Michiel a letter intended for Bertus, adding pressure to Michiel's involvement in the unfolding conflict.

Before Michiel can deliver the letter, tragedy strikes as Bertus, the village blacksmith, is killed by German troops. This event intensifies the sense of loss and urgency for Michiel as he grapples with the realities of war.

After opening the letter he received from Dirk, Michiel learns of Jack's hiding spot in the woods. He realizes that Jack is injured and feels compelled to help him, demonstrating Michiel's bravery and commitment.

Michiel seeks out his sister Erica, a nurse, to help tend to Jack's injuries. While caring for him, a budding romance unexpectedly develops between Jack and Erica, complicating the situation for Michiel.

Michiel's father, the town mayor, is arrested after a dead German soldier is discovered in the woods. This creates a heavy burden on Michiel, who must navigate the treacherous waters of loyalty and responsibility.
