Adapted from a play by Romanian writer Ion Luca Caragiale, a witty chronicler of turn‑of‑the‑20th‑century bourgeois life, the film preserves the slightly hysterical tone of his work. Director Cristi Pintilie turns it into a carnival‑filled burlesque, fast‑paced screwball comedy with a meditative edge. Banned for ten, it opened after the 1989 Revolution.
