Nae Girimea, a barber in a Bucharest neighbourhood at the turn of the 20th century, takes a new lover, Didima. His ‘soul‑mate’ mistress Mita Baston erupts with jealous fury, as does Pampon, the violent man who claims Didima. The pursuit and retribution play out during a carnival, with Crăcănel—Mita’s patron—caught in the chaos.
