Filippo Scicchitano portrays Leo, a young third-year high school student who is in love with Beatrice, Gaia Weiss as Beatrice, a French girl he meets mostly at school or at the bus stop. Aurora Ruffino plays Silvia, his classmate who has loved him since childhood and is his best friend.

After the Easter holidays, Beatrice is hospitalized due to leukemia, and Leo’s determination to help her grows stronger. He decides to become a bone marrow donor, hoping to save her life, only to discover that their bone marrow is not compatible, which devastates him. Meanwhile, at school, Leo forms a bond with a young English substitute teacher nicknamed The Dreamer, who encourages his students to chase their dreams, and Leo seeks guidance from this mentor.

Silvia regrets having given Leo the wrong number for Beatrice, and she encourages him to confess his love. Beatrice, however, recognizes that Silvia and Leo were meant for each other and tells him that their love is true.

The girl, very ill, lies to Leo, claiming that she has found a compatible bone marrow donor, that she would travel to France with her family for two months, and finally asks him not to call her. Leo is later summoned from the hospital because his marrow is compatible with a sick person. After a long discussion with Beatrice’s parents and with Silvia’s help, she convinces them and goes to the hospital, where she donates the marrow to a young mother, saving her life and discovering the greatness of her gesture with Silvia by her side. But soon Leo learns that the transplant isn’t enough; Beatrice pretends to be recovering to spare him pain, and when Beatrice dies toward the end of the school year, Leo finds himself with no more dreams to live for, yet he discovers Silvia’s love.

Q1

Why does Beatrice lie to Leo about having a compatible bone marrow donor?

A.

Beatrice lies to Leo about finding a compatible donor and planning a trip to France because she knows her leukemia is terminal and wants to spare him from watching her die. She pushes him away by asking him not to call, hoping to protect him from the pain of witnessing her decline. This act of deception is her final gift to Leo, allowing him to remember her without the devastating final moments.

Earlier, Beatrice tells Leo that Silvia and he were meant for each other, hinting that she already accepted her fate and wanted to prepare Leo for life without her.

Q2

Who does Leo actually donate bone marrow to in the movie?

A.

Leo donates his bone marrow to a young mother, not to Beatrice. After convincing Beatrice's parents and with Silvia's support, Beatrice herself agrees to go to the hospital and donate marrow to save this stranger. The transplant is successful and saves the mother's life, but Leo learns later that Beatrice's own condition was beyond help.

Leo initially volunteers to donate specifically to save Beatrice, but the timeline shows their marrow was incompatible, setting up the eventual donation to another recipient.

Q3

Why does Beatrice tell Leo that Silvia is his true love?

A.

Beatrice tells Leo that his love for Silvia is true because she recognizes the emotional bond between them from outside their romantic pursuit. As someone facing death, Beatrice gains clarity about what real love looks like, she sees that Silvia has always been there for Leo, loving him unconditionally, while Beatrice herself knew she could not stay. She wants Leo to find happiness after she's gone.

Silvia has loved Leo since childhood and consistently supports his pursuit of Beatrice, even though it hurts her, establishing her as the steady, enduring presence.

Q4

Why can't Leo donate bone marrow to Beatrice?

A.

Leo and Beatrice are not biologically compatible for bone marrow donation. This is confirmed early in the story when Leo learns their tissue types do not match. The incompatibility is random and tragic, despite his strong desire to save her, medical compatibility is required for the transplant to work, and they simply don't have it.

The timeline establishes this incompatibility as a key turning point that leads Leo to donate to someone else instead.

Q5

What happens to Beatrice after the bone marrow donation?

A.

After the bone marrow donation to the young mother, Beatrice pretends to be recovering to spare Leo pain, but the transplant she received was not enough to save her. Her condition was already too advanced. She dies toward the end of the school year, and Leo is devastated when he learns the truth, that she had been concealing the severity of her illness all along.

Beatrice's lie about having found a donor and planning a France trip foreshadows her deception about her recovery, as she consistently tries to protect Leo from painful truths.

Q6

How does Leo discover Silvia's love for him?

A.

After Beatrice dies, Leo initially feels he has no dreams left to live for. However, he eventually discovers Silvia's enduring love, she has been there all along, loving him silently since childhood. Through her support during his time of grief, Leo recognizes that Silvia's love is genuine and permanent, providing him with a new reason to live.

Silvia encourages Leo to confess his love to Beatrice and helps convince Beatrice to donate marrow, always putting his happiness above her own.

Q7

What does the title "White as Milk, Red as Blood" mean in the movie?

A.

The title references Beatrice's explanation of colors: red symbolizes love and passion (what she represents to Leo), while white symbolizes death and emptiness (the leukemia that threatens her). The contrast captures the film's central tension between youthful love and tragic loss, with the title reflecting Beatrice's dual nature as both the object of Leo's love and a girl facing death.

The movie description explicitly connects red to love and white to loss, establishing the symbolic framework from the start.

Q8

Why does Leo feel he has no dreams left after Beatrice dies?

A.

Leo feels he has no dreams left because Beatrice was his entire world, his motivation for becoming a bone marrow donor, his reason for personal growth, and his vision of the future. When she dies, the dream he was living for disappears. However, this emotional low point sets the stage for his discovery that Silvia's quiet, lasting love can become a new source of meaning and hope.

The Dreamer encouraged Leo to chase dreams, but Leo's primary dream was always tied to Beatrice and her survival.

Q9

What influence does The Dreamer have on Leo's decisions?

A.

The Dreamer, a young English substitute teacher, inspires Leo to think beyond his immediate circumstances and consider pursuing dreams. This mentorship gives Leo the courage to take action, specifically, to volunteer as a bone marrow donor. The Dreamer's philosophy of chasing dreams helps Leo transform his despair into a meaningful gesture of altruism, even when saving Beatrice proved impossible.

The Dreamer's influence appears during the period when Leo is grappling with Beatrice's illness, providing him with a framework for taking positive action.

Q10

Why does Beatrice push Leo away at the end of her life?

A.

Beatrice pushes Leo away by lying about her condition and asking him not to call because she wants to die without him witnessing her deterioration. She knows her illness is terminal and chooses to protect him from the painful reality of watching her fade away. Her final act of love is to let him remember her as she was, full of life and love, rather than as a dying patient.

This pattern begins when she fabricates the story about the donor match and France trip, establishing her strategy of gentle deception.
