Against the advice of his best friend Ted, Anderson makes a sweeping, impulsive gesture in a crowded restaurant, proposing to his girlfriend Vanessa while dressed in a Cupid costume. As the two move forward, they take cautious steps toward a shared life. They walk and talk, gradually opening up about their histories and their hopes. Katie reveals that her parents once had a shotgun wedding in a place known as The House of Wedded Bliss in Atlantic City, and Anderson, in a rare moment of clarity, reveals a similar vulnerability. Before they realize what they are doing, Katie surprises him by proposing, and he accepts, signaling a major shift from casual to committed.

The new couple doesn’t waste time. Katie moves into Anderson’s apartment, and the pair try to slow the pace, while the rest of their circle begins to clash with their ideal of romance. Anderson cleans meticulously, trying to impose order on a situation that feels out of control, while Katie is more eager to move forward. A friend, Matador, drives Katie to Anderson’s place but accidentally hits him, briefly knocking him unconscious. When Anderson wakes, the reality of introducing Katie to his world—his parents, his history, and the people who shape him—becomes undeniable. The meetings are awkward and uneasy. A rift forms between Anderson and Katie as an old secret — Vanessa — slips into their conversations. The journey spirals: William assaults Anderson, Ted’s boss believes the car has been stolen, and a reckless crash lands the group in a police car and a police station.

Katie’s parents, driven by a mix of desperation and stubborn devotion, chase them, rob the Tuxedo Depot, and end up in the same station. Anderson’s parents arrive later, drawn by concern and a shared belief in the couple’s commitment. In a wild turn, Katie’s parents manipulate the officers, liberate themselves, and lock the cops in a cell. What follows is a chaotic, improvised plan that depends on everyone’s willingness to bend rules and risk everything for a wedding that seems increasingly unlikely.

With the law closing in, Anderson, Katie, Ted, and their companions resolve to marry. They are allowed to drive a police-issue van to Atlantic City, where the ceremony finally takes place. The moment of union arrives, but it is immediately overshadowed by a humorous, stubborn sense of fate: as soon as they step out of the van, they are arrested again. The newlyweds and their entourage spend their honeymoon in jail, a tongue-in-cheek reminder that life, love, and luck don’t always align as neatly as a wedding dress and a ring might suggest.

In the end, the story remains a wry meditation on love’s persistence amid chaos—a testament to resilience in the face of heartbreak, a reminder that the road toward “happily ever after” can be tangled, chaotic, and profoundly human.
