In 1981, District Administrator Hans Schuierer faced a difficult choice when he publicly opposed the construction of a controversial reprocessing plant in Wackersdorf, Upper Palatinate. The project promised much-needed jobs for the economically struggling region, but Schuierer questioned the potential for severe health and ecological consequences for future generations. His defiance put him at odds with his own political party, the Bavarian Free State, and even Prime Minister Strauss, raising the question of a politician's responsibility when faced with such a dilemma.
