In the vast, sun-scorched expanse of the southern Ukrainian steppe, a routine mission turns into a disorienting odyssey for Lukas, an interpreter working for an OSCE inspection tour. Tasked with navigating military checkpoints near the Crimea border, he anticipates a journey defined by procedure and professional boundaries. Instead, a series of unexpected events leaves him stranded in a desolate landscape, severed from his colleagues and the familiar structures of his organized life. It is here, amidst the quiet intensity of the countryside, that his understanding of the world begins to shift.

Rescued by the eccentric Vova and brought to a remote village overlooking the Kakhovka Reservoir, Lukas is introduced to a reality that defies his expectations. The village operates on an anarchic rhythm, a place where formal rules have dissolved into a raw, sometimes harsh, but undeniably vibrant way of life. Guided by Vova and encountering his daughter, Marushka, Lukas finds himself an outsider in a tight-knit community that functions without the bureaucratic anchors he relies on. In this environment, survival requires adaptability, and the lines between guest and participant blur almost immediately.

Though initially repelled by the provincial chaos and the rough edges of local life, Lukas’s perspective begins to transform the longer he stays. The deeper he ventures into this unfamiliar terrain, the more he finds himself drawn to the unfiltered humanity of his hosts and the surreal beauty of the landscape. What starts as a desperate search for a way out slowly evolves into a contemplation of what it means to belong. Caught between the life he left behind and the magnetic pull of the steppe, Lukas embarks on a poignant internal journey to uncover a happiness he never thought possible.
