What Happens at the End of The Owners?
How The Owners (2023) ends, what the final scene means, which earlier moments set it up and how to read the ending if the film leaves it open. The full ending explained, with every spoiler.
In the final moments of The Owners, most of the intruders—Nathan, Gaz, and Mary—have been killed, leaving only Dr. Huggins, Ellen, and Terry alive. The climax reveals a dark truth about the Hugginses’ twisted motivations. Despite earlier showing concern for their missing daughter Kate, who had medical issues and disappeared, the Hugginses appear ambivalent or even pleased with Mary’s death, suggesting that their concern for her was superficial. Mary, who had been a sympathetic character trying to de-escalate the violence, ultimately becomes a victim, and her death signifies the unpredictability and cruelty of the Hugginses’ plans. Her act of killing Gaz in self-defense caught the attention of the Huggins, who seem to reward Terry for his loyalty with a disturbing gift: the reunion with Jane, whom they call “Kate.”
This revelation hints that Jane is actually Mary’s twin sister, and possibly a replacement for their lost daughter. The fact that Dr. Huggins and Ellen reunite Terry with Jane outside the house—after burying Nathan, Gaz, and Mary in their garden—implies they view Terry as a new part of their twisted family. The movie leaves many questions unanswered, such as the true fate of Jean and whether the Hugginses are genuinely looking for a lost daughter or simply creating new ones to replace the ones they lost. Terry’s character is likely complicit in the whole scheme, having been manipulated or convinced to betray Mary, possibly in exchange for his own safety or a chance to be with Jane.
In the end, the film’s enigmatic conclusion underscores the horror’s dark themes of loss, control, and the corrupting influence of power. It leaves viewers contemplating the unsettling idea that the Huggins family may be eternal reprobates, continuously seeking to replace what they have lost with obedient ‘daughters’ — a disturbing cycle that blurs the line between victim and villain.
