Viva Cuba

Viva Cuba unfolds on the island and follows two young protagonists who come from starkly different worlds. The story centers on Malú, a girl from a middle‑class family who is lovingly raised by her single mother, and Jorgito, whose household is poorer and shaped by a socialist environment, with his mother, Jorgito’s Mother, as a steady presence and his father grappling with alcoholism. The film uses these two children to reflect the broader texture of Cuban life and to explore whether they can glimpse—and perhaps influence—what the future might hold for their country.

After the death of Malú’s grandmother, a new worry surfaces: Malú’s mother plans to leave Cuba with a new partner. In a bold moment, Jorgito suggests they run away and travel to the far side of the island to try to persuade Malú’s father not to sign the exit forms. He adds a personal vow—that if they hug tightly, their bond will endure, even if Malú leaves Cuba.

The narrative contrasts their daily lives as they prepare for this risky journey. At breakfast, Malú’s world is tidy and bright—clean clothes and a plastic cup—while Jorgito’s remains rougher, with unwashed clothes and a metal cup. As the journey begins, the two children move quietly to evade the police sent to search for them, and their sudden disappearance intensifies the grief shared by their mothers.

Tension rises when Jorgito loses the map he brought, straining their cooperation. A festival moment complicates matters: Malú sings on stage at a festival that is broadcast, and the appearance of the girl on TV makes the parents suspect that the pair is heading toward the lighthouse. This realization fuels a clash between the children; the exchange of barbs touches on social divides—Malú questions Jorgito’s status, while he responds with a harsh remark about Malú’s mother.

Despite their quarrels, the pair are forced to rely on one another, learning that true friendship doesn’t crumble under pressure. A tent full of food and goods provides a test of trust when the owners confront the trespassing children. After listening to their story, the tent owner offers a simple, enduring lesson: true friends stay by each other’s side, even after disputes, and that moment helps rekindle their cooperation.

Their path leads to the lighthouse where Malú’s father works, but the departure forms have already been signed. The adults (minus Malú’s father) clash as the children retreat from the scene. Grasping at each other for support, they retreat to a cliff, where a giant wave finally thunders ashore, closing the journey with an ending that invites reflection on what their united bond might mean for their country’s future.
