Vennela Sai Pallavi was born in 1973 in the Warangal district, growing up amid a cross-fire between Naxal rebels and the police. She spends her childhood listening to the poetry of her father and later finds a powerful influence in the writings of Ravi Shankar, Rana Daggubati, a Naxal leader who goes by the pen name Ravanna and the title Aranya. This literary fascination blossoms into an intense, personal devotion, and Vennela becomes fixated on the idea of Ravi as both poet and savior.
In 1992, a police crackdown blankets her village, driven by suspicions that locals sympathize with the Naxals. The authorities brutalize Vennela’s father when he objects, and she confronts them with anger, drawing the ire of the lawmen. Amid the chaos, Ravi’s troop arrives and launches an ambush against the police, and Ravi reassures the villagers of their safety, making a deep impression on Vennela.
Driven by a singular obsession, Vennela calls off her engagement to her cousin, Rahul Ramakrishna, and announces that her heart belongs to Ravi. Her decision shocks her parents, yet she refuses to be deterred, leaving home the very next day and imploring them not to search for her. Her quest takes her through Karimnagar, where she encounters Vidyadhar Rao, who publishes Ravi’s books. She begs Rao to share Ravi’s address, but he refuses and ends up arrested by the police as she departs. The trail then leads her to Ravi’s home, where his mother reveals a long, waiting absence: Ravi left seven years ago, and his mother has kept vigil ever since. Vennela vows to deliver the letter she carries to him and to bring him back into the light.
Her search continues until she learns that Ravi can be found at Bhupalpally Degree College. The journey there is perilous—police frisk her under suspicion of Naxal sympathy, and she is escorted to the campus to confirm her identity. A tense exchange erupts as Ravi’s troop battles the police, and Vennela cannot meet Ravi in person. Undeterred, she seeks out Shakuntala, a human rights activist, and confesses a love that she hopes might touch Ravi’s heart. Shakuntala tries to facilitate a meeting, but Ravi, wary and skeptical of romantic devotion, bluntly tells her that he does not believe in love.
The tension thickens as the police close in, surrounding the building. Vennela helps set up explosives that enable Ravi’s troop to slip away, but she is captured in the process. That night, Ravi rescues her and shelters her at Shakuntala’s home. The new danger unsettles Vennela, and she decides to join the Naxals in the forest, despite Shakuntala’s caution. Sammaiah, a senior party leader, recognizes her spirit and recommends her for entry into Ravi’s unit, and Bharathakka—Priyamani—offers her support and perspective. Although Ravi initially resists, he consents to her recruitment after Bharathakka’s insistence, and Vennela steps into the movement with a humanitarian edge that earns her the party’s appreciation.
Time passes, and Sammaiah is captured by the police, who threaten to expose his fraud of exploiting the Naxal movement for personal gain. He reappears in Ravi’s circle as a covert ally for the police. Meanwhile, Vennela delivers the letter to Ravi and asks him to meet his mother, but a tip from Sammaiah triggers a police attack when Ravi visits his mother. Ravi and Vennela manage to escape, but the back-and-forth continues. In the chaos, Sammaiah murders eleven members of Ravi’s troop in a single assault and declares publicly that the Naxal movement has lost its ideals, infiltrated by hidden police agents.
The police send a forged message from the party to Ravi, instructing him to weed out the covert. Raghu, Naveen Chandra, who has long feared for Vennela, insists that she is the covert, a claim echoed by Bharathakka’s defense of Vennela—though Bharathakka’s outpost remains under scrutiny. Vennela pleads innocence, even trying to present her lost diary as proof, but the evidence appears damning. Ravi, convinced by the alternate signals, confronts Vennela and, with mounting pain, takes her to a secluded forest clearing to confront the truth.
In the forest, Ravi finally confesses his love for Vennela, yet his trust falters as he believes she betrayed him. In a moment of rage and heartbreak, he fires at her and flings her toward the adjacent waterfall. The river roars as Raghu and Bharatakka rush to alert him that the police warning had been a lie, but it is too late: Vennela’s fate hangs on the currents. Ravi pulls her body from the waters, his grief mirrored by the others who witness the tragedy.
This sweeping, emotional tale follows a woman whose devotion to a revolutionary ideal collides with the brutal realities of war, love, and loyalty. It confronts the costs of conviction and the blurred lines between rebellion and righteousness, leaving a somber reflection on how devotion can both elevate and break a person, and how the pursuit of truth can end in unforeseen devastation.
